So i ordered the 8170 with 4x2gb sticks of ram. Would removing one stick to make it tri channel be of benefit? Primarily im a gamer, otherwise general user. I would/will test when i get mine, but someone mentioned this to me yesterday and i was curious to the feasibility.

Mobile chipsets only support dual channel as far as i know. Only the D900F and X7200 support tripple channel with their desktop motherboards.
So go with 2 sticks (1 kit) or 4 sticks (2 kits) to run them in dual channel.

The NP8170 does not support tri channel, its dual channel only. Removing one stick of RAM wont help it out.
