I've put together the following two systems (I willl reveal brands at the end) to make some cost-benefit analysis and would like to hear what you think (sorry about title, didn't know how to change that)
System 1: - £1845
- 17" 1920x1200 WUXGA X-Glass
- Intel® Core™ 2 Duo P9500 Dual Core Processor 2.53GHz
- NVIDIA® GeForce® 9800M GTX 1GB DDR3
- 4GB OCZ DDR3 PC3-8500 1066Mhz 8-8-8-27 2x 2GB DIMMs
- 320 GB 7,200 rpm SATA with 16MB Cache
System 2: - £1800
- 17.0" UltraSharp™ WUXGA (1920x1200)
- Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T9300 (2.50 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 6 MB L2 cache)
- DUAL SLI 512MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800GTX card
- 4096MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x2048]
- 320GB Free Fall Sensor Raid 0 Stripe - 2 X 160GB (7200RPM) Hard Drive
Ok, so we have two systems (not entirely comparable I agree) with approximately equal price.
On the one hand, the System 1 has all the newest stuff (P-processor, DDR3 RAM etc) whereas System 2 doesn't. System 1 also has the new 9800m gtx (single).
System 2 on the other hand is giving you a 8800gtx sli, currently the most powerful GPU which easily beats the 9800gtx (single)
So I ask you, honestly, looking at each system AS A WHOLE, what would be YOUR choice? Now you can see which is which:
System 1 = Kobalt Mojave (same as NP 5796)
System 2 = Dell XPS 1730
-
Tough call! Depends on what you want. Other differences are the size and weight of the system (the Dell is heavier, I believe), the lighting effects on the Dell, battery life (I'll assume the Dell wins there, but I honestly don't know. The 5796 gets about 2.5 hrs. max with stock drivers and settings). Both are great systems, though! I guess if size doesn't matter, then the Dell seems like the better choice.
-
Yea, I left out the dimensions because I can live with both. If you configure yourself a Kobalt Notebok with 8800gtx sli however, you wont get anything below £2100...which makes the xps seem an even bigger bargain...
Dunno, anybody else have some thoughts? -
Just realised that there is a special offer on Dell, making the xps cheaper by £200...which explains something. Fact remains though, both these systems still cost the same and it comes down to More "older" power vs Less "newer" power if you see what i mean?
-
Im in the same boat as you(almost),want a 9262 but the cheapest sli option from Kobalt is 2350 where as the Dell is 1800,but im not that keen on the carbon effect pattern, also noticed today Rock has the 9262 with 9800gt-sli for 1995,but dont know what there like now.Overall i think the dell is the best value ,but you have to want it.
-
Wow, just saw the one with 9800gt SLI at rock for 2k ... actually not that bad if you think about it. Given that dell is at the same price if you disregard the 200 pounds current discount. AND you get quad core at rock...
Odd thing though is that Kobalt, which I thought was cheaper in all respects than Rock, offers the SLI model only with 8800gtx sli and that starting at 2.6k... oh dear this is getting confusing lol -

We will be adding 9800M GT's in SLI in the next few days. We didn't add them straight away because we've had such high demand for them in the single card notebooks that we held off on them in the Comanche SLI. Our prices will obviously reflect this change -

take 2 american 50c, put them togethet and you still get a dollar -
-
Yes, thats precisely why Dell is out of the competition (disregarding its discount). Also good to know that 9800GT sli is pretty much = 8800gtx sli ... so other than some new technology, gaming power remains unchanged I take it.
So all the ppl hopping on to get the 9800gt sli aren't really buying anything more powerful than previously available...only if you buy a 9800gtx in single card universe are you actually getting an upgrade vs what was available... -
used a dell before, using a sager now, definately recommend sager.. haha.
err heliosvector.. is he talking bout the 9262?? and the 9262 doesn't use ddr3 right.. -
lol? of course the 9262 uses DDR3.... its clevo's best laptop avialable,
-
So to conclude, either wait for 9800gtx sli and be King, or settle for single 9800gtx (and be King of single card universe) and enjoy it now!
I'll opt for the latter -

The 9800M GT as you guys have said is basically the same as the 8800M GTX.. except it's cheaper, buy quite a lot. Yes the 9800M GTX will be faster.. but by exactly how much and at what cost, is very much TBA. -
