Which way do you recommend going for a single drive (non-raid) setup ?
-
320. it should get near similar performance, run cooler, and 120 more gigs.
-
320 GB 5400 !
It`s as fast as the 200/7200 one ,but with 60% more disk space. -
It depends on what you do... If you're the average user who uses their computer for music, surfing and documents then the 320. If you're a gamer though, the 200 might be to your advantage as it would reduce load times.
-
It's been proven already that the 200GB 7200rpm=the 320Gb 5400 rpm one in performance.
The only advantage the 7200 rpm one has is the lower random search time, but it`s hardly sensible.
Besides, the 5400rpm one will give a better battery life. -
OR:
You could wait for the 320GB@7200rpm drives to be released, like me. -
And me ,also.
Or if you can get the 500 Gb 5400 rpm drives with 3 platters,it`d be even sweeter. -
how would energy consumption be on the new 320 7200rpm drive?
-
About 1.8W for reading,2.2W for writing.
The 320Gb 5400 has 1.8 for writing,to better enhance the difference. -

Would the 9262 fit the 500Gb drives? I think they are oversized, aren't they?
-
No, they should work,as long as they are 2.5 inch/9 mm factor ...
-
I think the 9262 is sized to take the 12mm drives as well (I remember reading that somewhere when the first 500GB drives came out). check with your reseller though
-
Even better then

Thanks for your quick replies guys.
My reseller is Rambo
When I opened the 9262 up it looked like the hd bays can take 12mm but even then the spacing
between two 12mm drives would be much smaller than two 9mm drives and I don't want to risk any overheating due to that.
I will call some resellers tomorrow to confirm though.
Imagine 3x500Gb drives 1.5TB in a single notebook -
people ask which to choose about these 2 particular HDDs every week.

i don't know. i just thought it was funny he brought up the obvious. therefore making the obvious, obvious.
-
Most of the people asking the question cannot use the search function or don`t even frequent this forum that much.
There is no big deal.
I`m working on a sort of guide with all the basics, and when finished, it`ll be in my sig. -
make sure you include the answer to "how do i turn my laptop on?" and "where did i leave my brain?"
-
Added to the first page
Now, I only need to figure out how to put pics inbetween text so that printrscreens show what I mean. -
open in adobe and print text on photo or extend photo with white canvas and add text there.
-
White canvas? what are those
-
I can't find it anywhere quickly, but the M570RU only supports heights up to 9.5mm is that correct?
-
As far as I know it does not support drives over 9.5mm (from specs and from looking inside one)
-
Thanks for the info! Then it's waiting for the 500GB 9.5mm one's. I thought Samsung had one, introduced in January already (Spinpoint M6), but still nowhere to be found
-
Try this instead; Open up a word document were you write your text and then open up a new window with your picture. You should now have two windows open on your screen. Then align the first window, with the text, to the bottom of the second window where you have the picture. Using the "click and drag" function with your mouse. Now you can press "print screen" and you have both text and picture on the same image.
I use this all the time. Good luckIf something isn't clear don't hesitate to PM me a question.
-
It was supose to be released in March, but we`ll probably see it this summer.

We currently offer the Hitachi TS5K500 500GB 5,400 RPM drive on all of our PowerPro models.
200GB @ 7,200 RPM = Fast
320GB @ 5,400 RPM = Faster
500GB @ 5,400 RPM = Fastest
See: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/wd-toshiba-join-club,1776.html -
-
These charts seem to show that the 200gb has a faster access time 14.7 vs 15.9 and burst rate, BUT has a slower data transfer rate. Still undecided about which drive would be effectively faster, and for what functions.
Would this mean I should use the 200gb for my OS drive and use the 320gb for my data drives?
Chris. -
Wow, a 500 Gb drive. That should be a fast one
-
-
It would make more sense to me to offer that HDD on the most popular laptop models .
Heck, actually , on all of them! -
-
Hitachi´s 500GB drive use 3 plates and 6 heads. 500/6 = 83.3, so 83.3GB per side of the plate.
A 320GB 5K one use 2 plates and 4 heads. 320/4 = 80, so 80GB per side of the plate.
The performance increase will be ~ 4%. So in terms of performance is almost negligenciable.
In terms of capacity, more 180GB is always welcome -
Granted you`re assumptions do translate into real life # , I`d get the 320 7200 rpm to be a smarty pants
-
In my humble opinion:
320GB 5k(2plates 4heads) = 500GB 5k(3plates 6heads) = 200GB 7k(2plates 4heads)
With the 320/500 5k drives having more peak transfer speed, and the 200 7k drive less seek times/latencies.
An 320GB 7k will smash any of them... -
Let´s wait for the 500GB 7200rpm
-
-
Since we`re at this, how about the 256 GB SSD

I love it
"Samsung claims the drive will become available around September '08 and though it'll no doubt cost an arm and a leg, we already want one."
An arm and a leg indeed, and a neck and a Harley -
And your children, and their house and their children`s kidnees
Just check out the read/write speeds on that sucker.
5.58$/GB though -
-
He was giving raw #, out of prime vision.
Still, I think the 500 GB should be faster. I`d get one if it were available.
Or a 320/7200,whichever will prove to be faster. -
But it´s 12.5mm, will it fit RU? Or just wait for the 3* M6...
320G/7200 is really expensive...~150€ <-> 320G/5400 7X€.... -
Yea,but I`m getting it in the states, and I`m sick of loooong load times. Never used a 7200 rpm so the placebo effect should make it all the better.
-
A friend of mine already bought a 7200.3 in US, didn´t know where he got it, but it´s 200$...
-
An 320GB 2 plate 7k will smash all of them...
Remember that it´s not only more RPMs, the 5k versions only have 8MB cache. The 7k ones have 16MB.

That`s my next hdd!
320GB@5400 or 200GB@7200
