Not worth the warranty loss risk for me personally. I look for reliability not max performance![]()

Once I used my modded 230W power brick I encountered no issues, but playing it safe is still probably the most sensible option, I just don't tend to be sensible with such things
-
hahaha like all I guess. Once you hear about what it's capable of achieving, the temptation certainly does grow stronger

To be fair for gaming FPS you should be more concerned with the GPU anyway, the CPU is just a nice touch.

OK so I am back with more info. I have re-applied the thermal paste today and have some interesting results.
The first screen grab shows a before shot of 10 minutes running the CPU stress test, clearly having some problems.
The second is after application running the same test. The drops in throttling are where I force the system fan to max with Fn+1. As soon as I disable that it spins down and heats up and throttles again.
To note I tried max fan in the first example and all others prior to now. What this tells me is that the re-application did help but that there is a problem somewhere in the logic of this systems fan control. It can obviously sustain max usage now but it will not speed the fans up by itself to do so safely. -
lucky you having Fn + 1
on the latest model this has been removed and only works with a few companys. modded bios i guess.
as i mentioned before my temps always used to get high on my m860tu when i ran a virus scan or defrag as the fans would ignore the software and not ramp up.
i guess this is the same for this software as the fans do speed up slightly but not to the maximum rpm so the temps shoot through the roof. -

Yes it's annoying like with the 680M, the fan profile is only designed to max at 90C - the point the 680M throttles causing the temps to "bounce".
Finding the voltage/clock where it is stable is then the challenge. -
This issue has been resolved by a return to manufacturer where they did indeed have to replace the CPU. I ended up with an updated BIOS (no more FN+1 functionality tho) a new heatsink/fan for the CPU and a 3740QM as a bonus! Max temp of 90 at full load now and really quiet fan! Updated the first post as well for anyone that lands here from searches.

thanks for updating the thread with your news kd7lri.
ive had 3 repastes now and everything is fine for 3-4 weeks and then it starts throtling again.
wonder if ive got a duff 3720 as well.
ive not been gaming lately but as its 32c here for the last week ive noticed temps peaking quite high again but gpu is fine. -
My story exactly though it was hit and miss as to if it would even help. I gave up on getting the manufacturer to just send me a new CPU (they wanted collateral and I couldn't afford it while being between jobs and I need my laptop for a lot of the stuff I do so I just lived with sub par performance for months).
I have read about a couple of other manufacturers having the same bad luck with the 3720. It appears to be more affected than any other CPU. If I were you I would reference this thread and all the expert advice, responses and end results to get them to replace it or upgrade it for you. I would love to hear back the end result of your story as well. -
will have a word with the chaps at mysn when i get a chance.
once again thanks for the heads up
3720QM high temp and 50% throttling in P150EM
