Recently I wanted to try out some overclocking on my GTX 260M to be able to play Skyrim a bit better. Now I know that there are many threads here about benchmarks on this card. I read through some of them and chose the GPU, Memory and Shader that were considered far below it's potential. I used Nvidia system tools and adjusted them.

However, later on when I tried to test it with Vantage and 3dMark06, they keep crashing with "IDirect3DDevice9: :present failed: Device lost (D3DERR_DEVICELOST)" When I attempt to rerun the benchmark, the performance according to those benchmark tools drops exactly in half. So instead of my usual 10000 and 4400 scores, I keep getting 6000 and 2200. Vantage test ran successfully only once with overclock and gave me the highest score yet.

The temps stay relatively cool - under 75C with load. So what could be the problem? Is it the driver? Is it benchmark software issue or my OC is really not stable? I played some games with that OC for an hour, and they seem stable. Am I really getting half of the performance though?

What clocks did you use? Have you tried MSI Afterburner for overclocking?

In 3dmark06 you should get 11-12k.

600/900/1500 Yes, I tried MSI afterburner first. Then switched for Nvidia System Tools out of convenience. I think the clocks may be too high, that's why it keeps breaking. Which is strange because other people pushed their clocks even further without overvolting. I also know it's not the overheating that crashes it. I never got 11-12k without OCing, my usual score is in my signature.

Try setting your memory at stock and only increase your core/shader. The clocks you use should be ok, especially core/shader.

If you are ocing, odds are the card is throttling. Seen that happen many times before. Set it back to stock then clocks benchmark. 10% oc, then bench mark. Then increment by about 3% each time to find your max oc, then lower it by 3-5% to have a stable oc. So if your card maxes at 20%, you max stable is probably around 15-17%. However, with laptops temps are such a big issue I would say have hw monitor in the background check for temps over 80c

Also could be an issue with the power settings on your lappy. Make sure it is set to performance.
