Anyone tell me their idle + working temps?

I had originally ordered mine with 3x200gb 7200's and the HD's got way too hot I wound up destroying one just by installing Windows....

    My temps were...
    HD in seperate bay
    25-27C Idle
    32-34C SMART fitness test

    HD's in bay together
    47-49 Idle
    67-70 SMART fitness test

Problem was max temp for those HD's was 60C...
Failure in design or is anyone else seeing this??

try western digital scorpio's. they run cool and are quiet, too. might want to try a notebook cooler too or running with hdd door open.

    67-70 ?
That is WAY TOO HOT, operating temps are usually 5-55C, max 60-62C usually.
I sugest you call your supplier to get them replaced or something.
Also, take a HDTune test, I trust those results a little more.
HDTune and HWMonitor can show you the max temps, so use it, while performing the test and see if it gets that high again.
If it does, call your supplier ASAP.

@pukemon and others:Is the WD better than Hitachi in terms of heat and noise?

yea.. .way to hot... altho mine idles at 44 which is higher than you separate bay. And it doesnt help theres no fans for HDD. You shouldnt have been able to destroy it by installing your OS tho... that deserves a replacement part under warranty.

yeah, i'm really not digging my Seagate 7200 either... if the design doesn't allow it to run over 60, then why the hell was it designed to RUN OVER 60?! This program: HDD Thermometer by RSD is what I use to make sure my HD doesn't die. It has 3 levels: normal, warning, critical. With each you can set color in tray and a slew of responses to breaking the threshold, including SHUTDOWN, which I have set to do when it reaches the critical temp of 62... already done it once during a spyware scan when I didn't have fans max.

from personal experience WD is by far the coolest hdd i have ever owned. i don't even think i've hit 40* under the usual conditions. i usually top out @ 37-38* when doing a scan or defrag. ymmv in different laptops though. but i can't complain when my operating temp is usually 30-35* idle usually about 32*+- a degree. this is also the quietest hdd, too. some disagree, but i've tried all the brands. i never hear this sucker tick at all. the fujitsu i have is annoying. the seagate i have is annoying when it's reeeeeal busy, but not too bad under light loads. i don't know about performance, but i do know my next hdd upgrade is gonna be a 250 or 320 western digital scorpio 5400. i am considering a 7200 if i find a good price. i missed some great sales last week.

I'll second Western Digital hard drives for running cool and quiet, they are the best quality drives on the market in my experience. WD uses thicker metal on their drives than other manufacturers do.
I have four WD drives in my desktop, I had one in my last laptop (its drive I still use four years later in an external enclosure), one in a Dell deskop from 2003 (original WD drive still kicking 5 years later), and I built another desktop with a WD drive. Trust me, they are good drives.

I believe WD are bringing out a 7200rpm 320GB drive soon so they'll be worth a look too. Our preferences are Western Digital (from our desktop experience) and Seagate though Samsung will have a 500GB drive that's 9.5mm very soon :) (well it's around now actually but only to selected system integrators  )

    Hello,

The 7200 rpms hdd are getting too hot. I have 5400 rpm hdd (in the secondaory bay, on the top of the battery) and 7200 rpm hdd. At idle the 7200 rpm hdd gets 48 and at peak use over 60. The 5400 rpms is at idle 35 and at peak use around 50. We a notebook cooler the teps get about 10 degrees lower. If I could choose now I would defeinilty get only the 5400 rpm.

4 inch electric fans run about 5-7 bucks at target/walmart. you could prop the laptop up in the back and set the fan to run from left to right or vice versa. should help your temps alot. i bought a cheap particle board tv stand and cut out a hole and mounted one of those 4 inch fans underneath the top shelf. puts any notebook cooler to shame.

I was hoping to have a fan next to the HDD and let it draw the power from somewhere inside the MOBO.I mean use a splitter from an existing fan or free connector for sli 8800 to power this fan.Practical?

i wanted to try to make that too, but i can't find any 5 volt fans in store. everything is 12 volts. i tried a 12 volt with 3 speed switch and the fan would only start on the highest setting. and it didn't blow very well. i did try it, and it helped temps on cpu and gpu slightly but not enough to make a project out of it. all you need is a 5 volt fan, and find some extra usb connections/extensions and splice that. i think you use the red and black wires. i use the above setup for when i'm at home but still carry my antec cooler s on the go.

thanks rambo, but i said in store. i don't use banks, therefore no cards so i rarely shop online. after making this project i don't have the urge/motivation to make my own laptop cooler. besides, it would be bulky as hell. and you can't beat 20*+ drop on cpu/gpu and a nickel on the hdd. using the fan on the right only drops my hdd another couple of degrees so i only use it when scanning for viruses, defrag or software install.

I am trying to get the fan get the power from a USB or the spare connector of the free 8800 card and if possible mount it sideways so as to prevent getting a hole done :)
