    I just received my Sager 8150 from XoticPC and I must say, I am VERY impressed. However, I do have a question for anyone in the know.

    I just started playing Empire: Total War on the system and I decided to max all of the graphics options out completely. Everything is as high as it will possibly go. I was expecting this to shoot the temps up pretty high but I wasn't expecting 87 C. This seems a little toasty for my liking. Ambient room temp was probably about 28 to 29 C. It has IC diamond for thermal paste, I was just expecting a little lower temp than that.

    *Also, I'll be posting an unboxing impressions thread in short order :D

    Laptop GPUs are built to withstand such temperatures. Seeing those temperatures on desktop components is dangerous, but in gaming laptops, it is pretty common. Also the 485M is an older chip, so it does run hotter than the newer chips that cost substantially more.

    Yes I do realize that the 485 isn't the forefront of GPU tech right now, but it is still only one card off the top for nvidia. I was just surprised because I saw guys maxing things like Crysis at 87 to 90 C and Empire isn't really as demanding as that. Granted, I know high eighties isn't uncommon in laptops but will running it at that temp for a sustained period of time cause problems?

    My 580M runs 90C (in 27C ambient room temp) on Furmark with standard paste. You're fine.

    Didn't mean to bash your GPU, I meant to allude to the fact that its temperatures may be hotter. Sorry if I came off as a snobbish elitist. :p

    Running it at that temp for a sustained period should be okay.

    In notebooks, don't worry about anything below 95C. It's not going to do any damage to a chip which has a danger zone somewhere over 100C.

    Furmark is a different story, games don't stress the GPU as much.

    @Anthony,

    You can try a cooler pad or raise the bottom of the laptop a few cm, the temps will be better.

    My GTX 485M SLI configuration runs @ ~ 73 degr. C max. after about 2 hrs. of Crysis 2 @ Ultra settings (ambient ~ 25 degr. C). Note: it's a few degr. lower then originally after I repasted it with Arctic Silver 5. Also, I noticed that raising the backside of the Notebook a few centimetres (with some kind of shims) indeed seems to help a little.
    Good luck :D

    OP, do you also use FN + 1 to turn the fans up full when gaming?

    Mine idles around 35 and heats up to about 78-79 after a long bout of gaming.
