Seems like it is REALLY overheating playing Diablo 3. I get to 90+ doing anything in Diablo 3 (onceto the point of being auto-shutdown), so I decided to raise the laptop up so the fans have more room underneath them. I do not have my cooler with me right now. Maybe I should check the thermal paste? I ordered this thing in March 2011. I get about 50C idling. I will probably stop playing for now, as I do not want to damage the GPU.

I have 485m on my 8150. No problems playing D3 during beta. Check to make sure your fans are clean from dust. Dust builds up quite fast with these laptops. I need to clean like twice a week or else my laptop overheats while gaming.

If there are no dusts then most likely thermal paste is the issue.

Fans on max: Under a decent size load you should hover around 81-84 degrees fahrenheit

Fans on idle: Under an idle size load you should hover around 63-69 degrees fahrenheit

One thing to keep in mind on Sager systems that I noticed is I have to clean my fans out more frequently then I did my Alienware in order to maintain a decent temperature.

It doesn't look like it's too dusty... I'll have to go get a screw driver and duster to open it up tomorrow. I also haven't been using the FN + 1 max fans feature.

I get small ammounts of dust and even then the temps rise 2-3 degrees C.
You will be surprised how small dust particles can make a few degrees difference (if not a dozen degrees).
    Just clean it.

If that doesent solve the problem fully, then set maximum frames to 60. That should releave the gpu stress.

I took a look at my temps while playing Diablo after seeing this thread and mine were around 102 C, so cleaned mine out as well. We'll see if it helps. My card is just a nvidia 9800m gts though.

It doesn't seem like the game is very demanding. Check if your fps are constantly over 60. If they are, try enabling vsync and check temps

given your video card, you may want to also consider a repaste if it has been a few years and possibly a laptop cooler as well.

Just purchased a p170em so just waiting on it coming in so no need to repaste. Already have a laptop coolermaster.

Mine idles around 37c, goes to 70-72c full load stock clocks.
This with notepal u3 cooler and ICD24+drilled holes in the back panel.
Oced to 700/1850 the max goes up to 82-85c.
Without cooler and with original back panel (no drilled holes) it was 38c idle and 82c full load stock clocks.
I advice to dust it out and repaste in case things doesn't get better.

What's the best way to dust it out? I just removed the bottom panel and tried to clean some of it up.

Kingpinzero, how do you get such good idle temps? Mine is usually at least 45c while doing some light web browsing.

Dust with air. You can buy cans of compressed air for this purpose unless you have diving gear, in which case use that.

Am I supposed to take the fans completely out so as to avoid just blowing the dust deeper into the hardware?

You can do. It's only 4-5 screws each I think. It makes it easier to clean underneath. Just be careful not to damage the fan cables.

Dunno mate, maybe it's due to the mods/cooler I listed above.
Also room temp is around 25c.
While browsing it still sits around 38c, when something like a YouTube video kicks in,which requires 3d clocks,it goes up to 40-45c.
But if I do browse content that doesn't involve the gpu it still at 50mhz,37-38c.

got the same temps as kingpin there, without any mods tho ^^ just keep my fans and heatsink clean as a whistle.

    idle 37-40C
    light load 40-45C
max load (furmark) with Fn+1 and back propped up: 81-82C

    using ICD as TIM

yeah man i noticed that when i play d3 the fan starts up right away. i wish those dumb F***s at blizzard would optimize for quad cores instead of dual cores, anyone with a gaming computer has at least a quad if not more.

I haven't had the chance to really deep clean my fans yet and I'm idling about 38 C but as soon as I start web browsing it immediately hovers about 50 C. However, I use a cooler when I game and it usually doesn't break 88 C. However, I really need to clean it out still but it's amazing what a cooler does. Also, ambient room temperature has a TON to do with it. I live in a very hot area and certain times I can't run some games without the cooler.

I haven't cleaned my fans out in over a year (I know very lazy) and I idle at 41C maxing out at around 80-85 depending on game. Perhaps it depends on the level of dust in the room as well as ambient and quality of thermal paste. My laptop is slightly elevated too.

id say u could improve those idle temps by around 2-4C and load temps by as much as 10C if u decide to get off ur lazy butt and clean those fans/heatsinks :p :D

I am still just getting overall crappy performance in Diablo 3. Really choppy frame rate. Other games seem to run fine (such as DOTA 2).

Diablo 3 shouldn't be that intensive on the 485m, the card has plenty of power.
Be sure you're using latest 301.42 and set the nvcp in this way:

    - under manage 3d settings set display to prefer single display mode and power management to Prefer Maximum Performance.

Be sure you're running max power profile in windows power management.
Also you may want to disable core parking to help things a bit.

I advice a small oc as well. Bring clocks to 650/1650. That should help as well.

Set Diablo III max fps to 60 and it should fix what you are having now, the choppy frame rate.

The max power profile in Windows Power management is a waste of energy and unnecessary heat. All anyone needs is the balanced profile and I have had no problem with any games when using that.

Do you just use the default balanced profile in yours or you customize it? The only thing I can think of that affects the GPU is just the PCI Express's Link state power management and it's off in both Balanced profile and High performance, so in another word, it doesn't matter in AC mode. Moreover, if you do customize the profile yourself, the name "High performance"/"Balanced Profile" doesn't actually mean anything.

I did customize it myself but I don't remember what I changed now. I just think the High power profile, if I remember correctly sets the CPU to 100% all of the time which is a waste in most cases.
