    Hello NBR crew,

Recently got a 4K TV and wanted to try some 4K gaming. Is this possible on a p170em? I've read different things, like you can go to higher resolution with display port, but not all the way to 4K. I'm using a 980m and CPU is 3720m with the Intel HD4000.

Should be fine... You won't play with max AA or anything but at least on medium-high...

Thanks for the info everyone. I'll order that part. I don't plan on doing anything too graphically intense at 4K. Would rather play games like gta5 at 1080 with high settings. I'll be doing more MOBAs (Dota2, Hots, LoL) at 4K.

The P170EM has DP 1.1a, so you won't be able to display 4k at 60Hz, only at 30Hz.

Bummer :( That is a deal breaker for me.

Time to upgrade to MSI GT80S Titan with SLI desktop 980s or clevo p870dm with SLI 980ms...

Looks like you got some big pockets, heh.

But yeah, you need a laptop that has HDMI 2.0, or DP 1.2 and get the DP 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 adapter (assuming your TV supports HDMI 2.0) to display at 4k 60Hz.

Hehe I wish my pockets were that big! I would LOVE to get either of those laptops. Especially the MSI with two desktop cards and the mechanical keyboard. But damn that's a lot of money!! I won't be buying it soon, if it all. Maybe by June or so of this year, but maybe next year. My single 980m should hold me over for a while, but I've always wanted a killer SLI system.

I do have one of the best 4K TVs for gaming (Samsung JU7500), so it's a shame I can't take full advantage of it now. Games running at 1080 still look great, and the tv has low input lag so it works well.

Nice TV you got there. My parents just got a 4k TV as well recently (Sony X850C), I haven't tried 4k yet on the TV, gonna need to buy one of those adapters too.

For now, enjoy your 4k videos and movies on your new TV.

I'll agree, that is a nice TV. Still might be worth trying out the mobas at 4k 30hz, and see if you like it better than 1080 60hz. Nice to have the options, for sure.

Our latest 867x machines do support the dedicated GPU through the external (and internal) outputs so these days you can even more output options without breaking the bank with certain machines ;)
