As the title suggests, I want to get a 4k external monitor for some photography work, and although the 7970M can surely handle 4k, it all goes through the Intel HD4000 igpu which theoretically doesn't output 4k.

Through some tweaks online I found ways to get it to connect as 4k but running at 29/30Hz, which is unacceptable.

I've heard about some dual cable shenanigans but nothing concrete.

Any solutions? Would be a shame for a perfectly capable computer not to be able to run a 4k windows desktop. I use windows 10 x64

The 7970M will do 4K@30Hz... 4K @60 will require a 970M/980M probably... that's if the displayport is then able to output the signal at required rate with new GPU...

It runs off the Intel igp for display outputs, the dedicated gpu has no impact on the max resolution and refresh rate.

That definetly not surprising.. Intel GPUs are always holding everything back..
