Anybody have any experience on with this setup? Can the GPU handle it?

it depends what youre aiming for... for current games, the 980M maxes out at 3K resolution pretty much, if were talking about maxing out the game´s features. for 4K ull most probably have to dial down some of the settings in order to get them fluent.

rule of thumb at identical settings and hardware:

    1080p gaming = 100% FPS
    1620p (3K) gaming = ~50% FPS
    2160p (4K) gaming = ~25% FPS

Okay, would the performance be 100% FPS if I were to downscale to 1080p on a 4k screen ?

Really ? Would I experience any latency or anything ? What about quality ?

Somebody mentioned the refresh rate of the 4k screens when you downscale to 1080p ?

    Refresh rate stays the same.

Quality wise it would depend on your eyesight and if you're sensible to blurring. I do notice a slight blurriness when gaming at 1080p, but nothing serious. Also, only noticed it when I hooked up an external 1080p monitor side by side.

You don't lose performance when you go from 4K down to 1080, it would give you the same performance if the screen was a native 1080 screen. But you also have the benefit of 4K for good FPS for less demanding games as well as other non gaming things like photos and video.

You shouldn't really experience any latency, refresh rate should be the same. 1080p on a 4k screen looks different than 1080p on a 1080p screen, but 1080p on a 4k screen should still be just fine.

If you're really wanting to get to 4k gaming and a decent FPS, you would probably want to look at something with SLI 980m's, a single 980 would come close to handling as well at a decent frame rate.

@HTWingNut comes through in the clutch! Great review man!

I think something important to remember, 4k is still at the early stages, as more people adopt it, the manufactures will have more incentive for making it, and nvidia more incentive for creating laptop GPU's that can push a 4k screen just like we see 1080 screens pushed today.

For the time being, it is still nice for non gaming related tasks on the PC (although who wants to do that?!)

HBM is going to be a big help going forward to actually give the bandwidth to handle the higher resolution, for now you can run 4k but you do have to sacrifice frame rate and quality.
