    500GB 5400 RPM HDD vs. 320GB 7200 RPM HDD for NP5796

Hi, I have a quick question. Is the performance of the 5400 500GB comparable to the performance of the 7200 RPM 320GB Hard drive. I'm pretty much settled on the NP5796 if I do get a notebook fairly soon. The NP9262 is just too darn big and heavy, or else I would get that instead. My only issue is the lack of a second hard drive bay. I'm planning on putting a lot of applications and games and such which will take up a lot of space. Is the speed of the 7200 RPM HDD worth it, or would 5400 RPM be efficient. My common sense tells me the 7200 RPM hard drive uses more power and is louder. Is that the case? If so, does the extra speed balance out the power usage and the noise level of the HDD? I'm not that experienced in this area of computers so please bear with me. Thanks :)

    320/7200 is FASTER.
I have the 320/7200 WD Scorpio and it`s silent, and blazing fast.

do you know what brand is used for the NP5796? I've read some brands are quieter than others...

If the 500GB 5400RPM HDD is the Samsung HM500LI, steer away - high power consumption alongwith not so high performance.
All the 320GB 7200RPM HDDs are good. haven't tried the Seagate 7200.3, but the WD Black is good and quiet, whereas the Hitachi 7K320 is the fastest in synthetic benchmarks, and has never caused any vibration problems or whatsoever, for me.
You can call up the dealer and ask about the HDD brand, but I think you cannot choose HDD brands when buying notebooks. So, if you are a bit choosy about HDDs, get the lowest HDD config, and fit in your own.

The 7200 is far faster. If you deal with large file transfers (20GB+ and 50k files at a time) you'll notice a massive speed difference.

In my opinion, they also save battery life, due to the fact it has to work far less to read and write the data to a drive.

fact is, the faster you want it to go, the more pwr it will use to produce the faster speed.
i will give you some points as a faster read/write causes less spin time, but overall the faster drive will use more power, however slight in comparison to the slower one.

I suggest the 7200RPM drive if you are looking for the most responsive system. A 7200RPM drive is almost always going to have a faster access time than a 5400RPM.

Does anyone know the drives in a D901C/NP9262?

I plan on getting a 200GB @ 7,200 RPM for my OS and a 320GB @ 5,400 RPM for my media storage. Together, the cost is only slightly higher than the 320GB @ 7,200 RPM. The 200 and 320 @ 7,200 RPM each are 60 cents / GB, whereas the 320GB @ 5,400 is much less. Is this a good way to go, or should I just stick with the single 320GB @ 7,200 RPM?

Well since you have the 9262, I'd say throw in three small 160GB or 250GB 5400RPM drives in a RAID 5. Tons of space, tons of speed, and great redundancy.

the 500gbs based upong the reviews used alot of power, tended to get hotter than the 320 7200, and was alot slower.

500GB 5400RPM is made by Hitachi and 320GB 7200RPM is made by Western Digital, right?

I debated this a lot too and chose to stick with the 320gb 7200 - although I would like the exra 180 gigs - that's a lot - I'd rather have a more responsive system.

So I went back forum hunting since I get a access denied error from the search box, and I found a post from justin@xotic linking to samsung for the 500gb hdd. I cant link yet my phone sucks for copying(thats what i'm typing from) But my 5796 comes in today(hopefully) and I'll post my impression of hdtune speed and give it a full run down on battery to find out what we are dealing with and if it bites or not. Any special request benches on it you guys want me to run?
