Ok, I want to place an order for a 5793 and I'm getting it without a hard drive. I really want to get it by the end of next week so I should order asap, but the problem is, the new samsung m6 spinpoint 500GB drive isn't at any retailer yet. When is it going to be available, particularly on newegg? I want to have a 500gb hard drive in my hands by the time my sager arrives so I don't have to wait to use my 5793

well I ordered my notebook...and I don't have a spare, so I guess if I have like a month or so to wait for the drive then I'll get a 320. but i'll just keep my hopes up for now...

According to article in Washington Post: "Priced at $299, the hard drive is shipping now to OEMs and PC makers, and will be in retail stores later this month."
I am waiting for it too! Please post if you have a link to a review of this hard drive.

    what would the speed be? 4200? 5400? 7200? ( ! )

if it's anything less than 7200 it's not interesting for me.

You guys might want to wait to see if the HDD has any production flaws. Let the masses try it out 1st then if no problems surface during the first couple of months then pick one up. You can get bitten hard if you jump in without looking.

because it is 500GB it wont matter because of the density, the bigger the space the faster it should be, 7200 wont see you any more speed as long as you have lots of space.

i would be getting a 500 gyg to use the space, not to 'have' the space.

This drive will probably have faster everything (except access time) compared to the fastest 200GB 7200 RPM 2.5" drive, because of much higher density of data. Can't wait for reviews.

The 200gb 7200 drives are actually virtually identical speed wise to the 320 gig 5400 RPM drives because of the increased size of the 320 gig drives. This 500 gig drive should most likely be faster than any 7200 rpm drive you can get.

no, but I went for WD Passport 320GB from buy.com for $145.99 - $20 google checkout discount... $125.99
I will take 320GB out and put it in my laptop and put my 80GB drive in the passport case and use it externally... not bad for $125.99!!!

It wouldn't have been worth it to me to pay $299 for 500GB... (but surely it will be much faster though).

    I'm gonna just get 2 more 320's and have 960 raid 0.

or get another 320 have raid 0, 640 and then grab a 500 and have 1.1terabytes..

    hmmm decisions decisions
