I have read over at NBF that by disabling the IrDA port you can eliminate the hiss from your audio. I have also seen that the his is part of the 5720 line as well as the 5320.

Yes, I do get the hiss in my audio. Thanks for the great tip, I'll try it out if I ever find my headphones...

No Problem Chaz, hope this works for you. Seems to be working well over at NBF and most people don't need the IrDA enabled anyway.

Yeah - IR is an old technology...being rapidly replaced by bluetooth.
The only reason I would need IR is if I had the TV tuner - the remote is IR. -
how do you disable the IR DA, i might try it on my N6210, does it get rid of all hiss even at high volumes with no sound?
-
I might try this on mine when I get it.
So yea, how would you disable it? -

Ah ok I did it. Disabling the IRda port is simple - go into the Device Manager, and disable the IR port, and then stop the service - Start > Run > services.msc, find and disable "Infrared monitor".
It has not eliminated all of the hiss, it is still audible, but it did get rid of the very annoying "cricket" noises. It is good to get rid of that - very disruptive! -
i found that muting cd audio in volume control and muting pc beep gets rid of basically all hiss with volume at about 60 %
It looks like they already disabled it on the N6210 without a TV tuner, there isn't even a driver for it, my audio hiss wasn't bad at all but doing these 2 things ^ did actually help a decent amount, although the hiss wasn't even noticeable unless volume was at 5/15 with absolutey no sound playing -
I am also pretty sure for a more permanant fix you can disable it in the bios. I just got done working on a gateway model? (don't really care it was for a friend of a friend) and I asked him if he had any hiss coming through his speakers and he said he did. I then asked him if he used IR and said no, so I disabled it in bios. I think that would be better as it should actually turn it off and hence stop drawing power, where as in device manager it is still on just not usable by windows.
