Is there a noticeable difference in performance between the two? I'm looking to upsize my C drive(have a 100gb 7200rpm drive now) and want to know if it's worth the extra cash to get say a 200gb 7200rpm drive versus a bigger 5400 rpm drive?
Thanks boyz and girlz!

the new 320GB 5400rpm drives have shown to perform close to the same as a 200GB 7200rpm drive.

I find the WD320gb drive i have in my laptop easily fast enough, they do perform about the same as the 200gb 7200 drives so it would seem the 320gb is the one to get as it will offer more storage as similar speeds

Thanks Chuck!
Any recommendations on which brand to get? -
Western Digital 320GB's seem to be the bang for the buck.

The drive that came with my 9260 are the 1.5Gbps variety. Do I have to stay with that or can I go to the 3.0Gbps strain? Does it make any difference? Will my computer run the 3.0 version just fine?

Is the extra $60 worth it between these two or not?

You should go for a 320GB drive with 16mb cache.... thats the model that will perform just as well or close to a 7200rpm drive.

got it! thanks for the help Gophn!

A Hitachi 7K200 200GB outperforms all 320GB 5400rpm drives in 90% of the situations.

You can pick them up for 99$ after rebates. -
The old WD3200BEVT (which was compared in the link) does perform like typical 5400rpm drives.
The new WD3200BEKT is what performs as well as the Seagate and Hitachi 200GB 7200rpm drives. -

Sorry, mix up on model numbers.
I tested a 320GB 5400rpm drive 16mb cache and it performed as well as my old 100GB 7200rpm Seagate.
I used HDtune for the benchmarks.
There are a number of threads in this forum that also did similar comparisons. -
The 7200 rpm will also get very hot. Mine without a notebook cooler doing nothing stays at around 50 . When at peak goes to 60-61

In transfer rates the 320Gb 5400rpm WD comes close to the Hitachi 7K200. In access times the Hitachi is quite a lot faster: 14.6 ms while the WD scores 17.0ms. So when running OS, applications or games the 7K200 will be quite a bit faster.
What I'd like to see is how the 7K200 compares to the 3200BEKT in real benchmarks (not synthetic). While the 3200BEKT has much better transferrates, the 7K200 has the lowest accestime. -

Im on Vista Ultimate atm, but if you want ill put xp on it aswell if you want, i dont mind

If it turns out to be too much work, PC Mark Vantage on Vista would also be interesting. Not so much comparison materials although I believe Anandtech.com uses this benchmark too. I'll look into that. -
Some notebooks will already have the WD 320GB hard drive. Like the Sager NP8660 (a.k.a. Clevo M860TU) for instance. I'm sure the hard drive runs cool and quiet. I'm more concerned about it's overall performance. I can't wait for a review!
I'd be more impressed if companies started to offer 1 terabyte hard drives in their notebooks as standard.

It shouldnt be a problem, im using ma dads notebook atm, it has the WD320gb with the 8mb cache, you want tha aswell for comparison? Vista aswell tho sry

What does burst rate do in terms of real-life use? Cause i noticed the 320/7200 blows the other's burst rate outta the water.

I just wait for the 320GB 7200RPM 16MB cache in the 8660.
