you can check for HDD errors by doing:
CHKDSK C: /F (in Command Prompt)

so the scan came up with nothing?
    - no errors fixed
    - no bad sectors?

I would also recommend using a program like "Spybot: Search and Destroy" (advanced mode > tools) to check the "System Internals" to clear out any registry inconsistencies.

And you can look at the Windows Event Logger to see what is holding up the shutdown process.

it wouldn't let me in. on top of that, when it try to use update windows, it gets hung up and i have to use task mang to end it, but even that is messing up and task mang just drops into the system tray. i ran a anti viru and nothing sowed up. i have spyblaster and spyware guard running. i just hope it isn't a software vista 64 bit corruption problem because i'm not in the mood to reformat this week.

Spyware Guard is the name of a both a rogue antivirus and a genuine AV - that is to say, you may have a virus of which Spyware Guard is the symptom. I would recommend getting a 2nd, 3rd and 4th opinion from a different AV: maybe Kaspersky's online scan or NOD32's free trial or Avira free. Even if you know your copy of Spyware Guard is legit, I would still recommend doublechecking using an AV with a more proven track record.

Just in case, if you do not have the legit SpywareGuard and are instead running the dodgy Spyware Guard 2008, it's likely you have the Vundo virus or something similar. The best way to get rid of Vundo in my experience is to use SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes in Safe Mode (get to Safe Mode by hitting F8 during boot up and selecting it from the menu, but you should have those antispy progs installed first).

to do a proper CHKDSK for Vista:
    - START > Accessories > right-click on "Command Prompt" > choose "Run as administrator"
    - (in Command Prompt) type: CHKDSK C: /F
    - press "y" (for yes) when asked
    - restart your system and CHKDSK will autoload to check the HDD for errors.

if you cannot even restart properly...
    - then get your Vista DVD, pop it into the DVD drive and autoboot from it.
    - go to "System Recovery Options"
    - choose "Command Prompt"
    - (in Command Prompt) type: CHKDSK C: /R

well, i tried the chk dsk in adm mode and it would pull up, i even tried it in safe mode with same problem. then i tried to uninstall games with large files and it hangs up. it has to be a window software problem. i can run firefox, video player and burn disk with roxio 9.
do i just put the vista disk in the drive and it will let me reformat? i am think of not using the 64 bit and switch to the ulta vista 32 bit.

Gophn, i did the chskdsk thru the dvd install and it showed no bad files or bad sectors
3 main things that are happening
1.windows will not shutdown unless i press the power button
2will not uninstall large files like games
3most or all windows apps get stalled for a few minutes or gets hung up completely. i can run firefox, opera, but if i use something like revo uninstaller, it gets hung up and stuck. maybe a reformat is in order.
i have a 32 bit and 64 bit ultra vista dvds but running the 64 now. should i put 64 back on or the 32 bit?

I recommend to the the following:

    (in this order)

    1) START > Run > sfc /scannow
.... this will check the integrity of your system files and fix/replace them if needed

    2) do a disk defragmentation.... using a utility like Diskeeper Lite (free in Intel Desktop Utilities)

    3) if both the two suggestions fail, you should do a Repair Installation with the Vista Install DVD.... which would not affect any of your data... it will force the repair of crucial system files and even re-do the registry (keep all your old info intact)

ok, i got time tonight to reformat, should i reformat the old fashion way or do i just drop the dvd disk in? if i just drop it in, will it completely reformat and rewrite itself to the harddrive? i don't want it to make a seperate partition.

    reformat is a reformat.

partitions are useful if you are dual booting or want some organization.

    update on refresh reformat.
everything went well. one thing that i wasn't aware of on ultra vista is if you have a large amount of disk space left, vista will copy your files in to a file folder called window.old....had i known that, i would have taken the time to back up things on disk and flash drive

    however, a very cool feature
