I am getting the N5720 from pctorque (this weekend)
I called their sales office and asked what brand of RAM is used.
Their HD's are Hitachi's (apparently the recommended brand by Clevo, the original OEM).
Their RAM is 'Winstock' or 'Pacer'.... I have never heard of either of these, and havent been able to find them online (newegg, ebay, etc). Anyone got a link for me?
My question is, would it be better to void the warranty (on the memory only) and order some OCZ / Corsair / etc to install yourself, or go with the Clevo recommended/tested RAM modules? (2x1024 sodimm ddr2 pc2 4200)
What do the latencies mean? How should these be evaluated?
I guess i just dont know what i am talking about when it comes to RAM![]()

Hm, my RAM was Transcend . .
You can never tell what they are going to send - I asked my dealer about that too. They said it depends.
Installing your own RAM wouldn't void the warranty.
Latencies are a measure of how fast of a response you can get a response from the RAM - in its basic form that is. The lower, the better.
With DDR2 in a laptop, the typical timings are 4-4-4-12.
I bought OCZ RAM for my Sager, it has 4-4-4-8 timings. I paid quite a bit for that. It doesn't make much of a difference, it is unnoticable really. I upgraded my RAM because I only had 1GB and I wanted 2.
Sorry for not seeing this sooner. -
cheers for the reply

I just ordered a 5720 from Xoticpc with 0 ram. I have 2 sticks of Crucial(533mhz) I will be installing myself.

Does it really matter what brand you use?
Can I just go to newegg, look up notebook memory, buy some and stick it in, and it'll work? -

Yes, if you get the correct type, it will work perfectly OK.
I don't like to buy cheap no-name memory. I purchase name-brand to stay safe and so I know I'm getting quality stuff. Brands I recommend are Crucial, Kingston, Corsair, and OCZ. I have 2GB of OCZ in my laptop, works wonderfully.
The 5720 takes 200-pin, DDR2-533 memory.

What about some Mushkin?

I don't have any experience with Mushkin personally, but it's good quality from my understanding. The reviews for the sticks you posted are very positive.
