Let us know how things are going jack. One of the guys over at NBF used his battery for about and hour and still had about 30% left. I am pretty sure with some tweaking and undervolting you can get at least 2-2.5hrs out of a battery.

I'll be suprised if you can squeeze 2:30 out of the 5720

I highly doubt 2:30, that's what I get, and I have the same battery, a smaller screen, and less power consuming GPU.

I'd say less than two hours is more realistic.

sounds good Jack, and you should love your laptop for 3D animation, the 17 in. widescreen is so perfect for that, Softimage XSI, Maya 7 and MotionBuilder, SketchUp, and many others run perfectly on my N6210 and they should be even better on you 5720.
I haven't tried 3DStudio Max yet but it should be just as good. Just make sure to get a good 3 button mouse for all those programs. and if you really get into you might considering another HD (is that an option on the 5720?) that is my plan for the N6210 once i really start to get some work done. I just went to an Alias Maya 7 and MotionBuilder 7 demo/event at my school and took my N6210 and staretd using Softimage XSI in front of everyone :) :) and then played a little Lost Coast, that made the Alias people happy :), don't get me wrong i really like Maya but i just had too.

Thanks for the tips on those apps, Circa! I'll bet that demo event was fun.

Believe it or not, I still haven't done much with my 5720. Work is kinda crazy and when I get home I'm not really in the mood to sit in front of another computer. Worry not, pics and review are on the way. I've got a three-day weekend starting Friday. I plan on spending lots of time getting to know my 5720.

Ardor: Too funny!! I guess I need to seriously re-think my priorities if I'm writing about a computer the way I would about a hot chick. Must be my subconscious telling me to get a life!! :p

I actually have a friend who has the new M170 (pretty much the same thing) and after some undervolting and running CHC (I think that is what it is called) he is able to get 3.0 hrs out of his battery. Now this is not intense gaming or anything like that. He has screen brightness turned down, wifi off, undervolted processor, and it is being used for note taking in school and he said he consistantly gets about 3hrs usage.

On another note....borrowed said notebook and messenger style case he uses from my friend today and took an average length walk and went to local stores in search of a rolling laptop case that could hold it (or a 5720) as the messenger bag was killing my back as my backpack in college did recently (2 back surgeries). I came to the realization that I am going to get the 5320 for a number of reasons.
    1) Portability - I was able to find many nice rolling cases that fit a 15.4" screen.
    2) I can spec the 5320 almost identically to the 5720 minus graphics and screen size and get 2gigs of ram instead of 1 and save myself about $400.00.
    3) Said 400.00 dollars in savings will be used to upgrade my network to wireless MIMO (including MIMO adapter for 5320) and get me my x-tras for the lappy (mouse, case, other assorted goodies)
    4) I am a gamer, but mostly play GuildWars & now WoW. If I want to play F.E.A.R. or something likewise with intense graphics I will do it on my desktop (soon to be upgraded to 7800GTX and AMD X2).

Yes, I felt very much the same. It's not heavy at all. The only size "issue" is if you actually put it on an unstable surface, the huge screen is unbalancing. But then again, not everyone sits in the position I do. I have a kidney-shaped wooden lapdesk (Levinger catalog) on which I put the machine and my trackball. This probably accounts for why the power cord thing is an issue for me. On a more stable surface, it won't encounter as many tugs. I actually bought a second power suply, so I'll see if that one is any tighter.

I just have to actually get home from work at a decent hour to do proper evaluations.

This thread is 7 days old. The title of the thread indicates that some people already have the 5720 in their posession.

Unfortunately, receiving the 5720 has the unfortunate side effect of putting one into an extreme vegetative coma where they don't care about laptops anymore and are unable to post reviews or pictures.

That, and can somebody really write a meaningful review after only using the computer for only an hour? Or a few hours a day around work?

I am sure that we will be seeing an NP-5720 review soon, as many people that have them already and said they would write a review. The 5720 hasn't even been out long, perhaps for a month, so it is understandable that there are no reviews to date.

Heck no! I am more of the sneak-up-to-the-fogged-over-car-window-and-take-a-peek type of guy. LOL

Kidding of course, I know that if i had one of these sought after machines I would want to get a chance to play with it and make sure my review was all-inclusive rather than possibely missing important points.

Full reviews are important, but so are little teasers. The VERY FIRST thing I would want to do is test the merit of the nvidia 7800 card by installing a 3d game and going to NBR and posting about the performance of said game. How difficult is that?

Maybe they're too busy playing and can't pry their eyes off the beauty of the 5720...

Been too busy to hang around here, lately. So much for my three-day weekend. Some of us actually have lives and responsibilities. If you're so desperate to read a review, buy a 5720 a write one!

Here are a few screenshots of Quake 4. BTW, Quake 4 is excellent. It looks incredible and plays as smooth as glass on my 5720 at even Ultra settings. Choosing the WSXGA+ screen was definitely the way to go.

More pics and my review to follow as time permits.

If i could, i truly would.

WSXGA+ > WUXGA in your opinion?

I also like the WSXGA+ resolution. It's more practical - a WUXGA resoulution is very difficult for a GPU to handle, and if you are not running in native resolution, then the screen will be somewhat blurry. Many people have problems with the small font size at that resolution as well.

Of course, it is personal preference, and if you can see them in person before you buy, that would greatly help your decision.

    Wo0ot I get my 5720 tomorrow!!!

I'll be sure to get a review up in about a week...

But for now I got a quick question:

Can you plug in a regular NON usb mouse into the notebook or does it only have the option for a usb mouse. Also if it's only usb is there an adapter I can buy to plug in my regular desktop mouse?

    Thanks

Well, if you have a PS/2 mouse, that won't work - the 5720 doesn't have a PS/2 port. There are adapters, yes - get them at a local computer store. ;)

No, I haven't sufficiently pined for it. I've already bought one notebook this year and I was wanting the next purchase to have VISTA pre-installed. Still, I can covet yours and live vicariously through your assessment of it. If it crosses the line of "must have", then I'll break my plan of waiting for Vista and get it even though I don't need it.

Purchasing the Vista preinstalled with the reseller rather than buying it retail do have advantage like lifetime technical support from the reseller themselves...

We were discussing warranties, customer service, and what happens when a defect is found when you buy your laptop, and if original parts are used...

You be amazed who pays for the return shipping in case you have a dead or defective laptop... have other details in the link below

I've learned something about the AC power cable issue. I bought and addition power supply for my machine when I ordered it. They turned out to be from different manufacturers. The one from Li Shin International Enterprise Corp is the one that has the issue. The one from FSP Group Inc is satisfactorily snug.

From visual inspection the FSP plug has an additional friction ridge and is a few milimeters longer than the Li Shin plug. This probably accounts for the better "traction" as it were.

Other than that, I don't have any updates, other than to say I'm still very happy with this machine. JackBauer has a review with benchmarks in another thread if you want more "hard" numbers.
