Hello fellow notebook fans,
I recently purchased the 5760 from Hypersonic-pc and have been amazed at the perfromance of this machine even with the lowest version of the Merom (T7600 on order from Newegg though).
However my one and only gripe is the noise of the northbridge (small center) fan. Realizing this is a performance machine the noise of this fan still sounds like a microwave reverbing in my ear. It does throttle when the system turns on and also does "ramp" up (on and off) as it should. The sound is an extreme whine. So my issue and question for ya'll is two-fold:
1. Has anyone else had a problem with the sound from this fan?
2. Is there fan control software that will detect the motherboard PLL correctly and work for this system?
I am guessing it is the low voltage mode of this particular (40mm?) fan. I should also clarify and say that the noise I'm talking about is after a while of idle time once the chip under this fan (I'm assuming it is part of the graphics on the northbridge) heats up. If it's on loud while I'm gaming that's completely understandable.
Thanks for your inputs.

Well if I use my laptop in an office room where the temperature hovers around 21C, then everything is nice and quiet. But as soon as ambient rise above 25C, it usually kicks off.
Maybe what you hear is the GPU fan? Mine will kick off like I said when ambient temp become uncomfortable, or as soon as I play GuildWars for 5 minutes.
Yeah the high pitched whine is bad. But it should not run all the time.
On the contrary the CPU / NB cooler (I'm guessing there is only one) usually makes a comfortable low ventilation noise; usually it will run high when it starts for a fraction of a second and then it's down.
Always make sure you use your laptio on a flat surface no blocking of the fabs under. This will help. You can also try a laptop cooling pad. Some reported nice results from the use of this. -
thanks.
I think I am confusing ya'll with which fan I'm talking about. It is the small fan in the center of the base of the laptop that is whining. The large fan noise is not a problem at all. I had considered a powered laptop cooler but wondered if there was a more permanent fix.
Currently using an elevated platform as a base that raises the angle of the keyboard to about 20 deg...no obstructions underneath. -

I tested a Clevo M570U earlier this month; you can see what I said about fan noise in there. I personally did not find it to be that bad, but it definitely was noticeable.
Clevo notebooks do have fan control, but it only allows you to do max. fans; use Fn + [F2].

Excellent review Chaz. After reading it I completely agree with what you said about the noise (and the performance...what a screamer!). Just too used to quiet desktops and virtually silent laptops. I'll look into changing out the fan and/or getting a powered fan base. Now if I can just get to that little guy...
Thanks for the insights. -
I would certainly not advise changing the fan. You GOT to have an high speed fan to cool that kind of GPU. The only thing is that you can't stuck an 80mm fan in there. So in the 40mm factor running at more than 4k RPM, it's gonna scream anyway, whatever the cooler (Sunon, SilenX are some quiet fans).
Put a slower rotation fan in there and you could burn your GPU...
Buy the pad.
