I just got my 5760 on thursday and after installing windows I have noticed every once in awhile this starts to happen:

I am wondering if this is hardware related or just software related. If it is software related can it be fixed? I dont have another copy of windows to test it with. I did try vista and didn't notice anything like this.

What video drivers are you using?

Did you install the Intel chipset driver first, and then your other drivers after that?

I did the driver install using the driver cd that came with it, and installed in order. I first used the video drivers that came with the computer and then tried the new ones from laptopvideo2go

Don't fix it if it ain't broke. If you are using the laptop2go drivers when this happens please uninstall them and go back to the Sager certified drivers.

run it on the bios screen for awhile and see if it still happens

if it does, it is hardware

if it does not, its drivers

I installed windows vista and never saw anything like this, so Im guessing its not entirely hardware related.

that gives me some old fond memories.

it is 70/30 chance of being software or hardware from wut you just said.

the way to find out if its a damaged video card is to:
    - warm up the video card (eg. 3DMark, games, etc)
    - look under your notebook to see if the fan(s) are working corectly since the heat adding up.
    - go to Windows Explorer, go to Windows folder, go to View > List.
    - now scroll left and right, artifacts (black dots from the text on files would appear & remain in the background) should occur this way if video card is damaged.

Trust me I know artifacting (on notebooks & desktops), since i used to overclock and experiment. This is a procedure that has worked to checked for artifacts from damaged video cards since Win95/98.

In your case tho, the snapshot seems to be suspicious. It looks more software than anything else, but there could be a very small chance that its hardware.... doubtful on that though.

Although come to think of the the picture reminded of a loose LCD inverter in a notebook I used to have. So something might be loose in the notebook.

I tried doing what you said, when I did the windows folder and the list then scrolling left and right it didnt seem to do anything. Also I never seem to see any artifacting in-game, it really is only when Im out of a game in windows when it happens.

I dont know what this means, but when I uninstall my 7900gtx drivers and use the laptop i never see any artifacting...does this mean that it is the drivers doing this? or when the drivers are uninstalled is the 7900gtx not being used at all?

If you uninstalled the drivers and it is not doing it, then it is high probability it was the drivers causing the problem.

Yes the video card is still used without drivers. you wouldn't get a picture otherwise. Windows just uses generic VGA drivers for display.
    Go grab this- http://www.drivercleaner.net/professional.html
Clean out all your video drivers and then do a fresh install of the certified drivers that Paladin suggests.

Well I just called Powernotebooks.com and the tech guy said he would have Sager call me up tommorow morning and hopefully have them send me a new video card for my laptop and I can send my old one back. This is pretty frustrating seeing that I waited so long to get my laptop from them. Hopefully I dont have to send the laptop in and they can just send me the new card, because I have no other computer now for my house.

Invulse, did you do what Elminst suggested?

I fear that since this started when you installed the non-Sager certified drivers that could have caused the problem. If you don't do a clean uninstall of those drivers, and just install the Sager drivers again, you will not have eliminated the problem.

    Please do the" http://www.drivercleaner.net/professional.html
Clean out all your video drivers and then do a fresh install of the certified drivers that Paladin suggests." first before you go any further, and then when the Sager technician calls you can report that you have already done that.

I'm now 100% positive that the problem is not caused by drivers. I have tried useing Drivercleanerpro and have tried every driver set possible for the 7900gtx go. When I called powernotebooks tech guy last night, right after I told him the problem and said i tried using all the different drivers he thought that there probably is a problem with one of the memory chips on the card, which sounds right to me.

Great! Now when the Sager tech calls you can give him all that information and they should just arrange for a cross ship of a new video card to you.

Please let me know if you have any difficulties with this process.

Is replacing the notebook GPU fairly easy? And will I have to apply the Artic Silver stuff to the heatsink or will it already be attached?

Yes, it is easy...no, there is not Arctic Silver 5 on the GPU, only the CPU.

I should have mentioned there is still the possibility that the Sager tech can get your artifacting fixed without replacing your video card, so please work with him and don't assume that you should jump right to the cross ship. The probability is that you will need your video card replaced, but there are other possibilities to, so I just don't want you to cut the technician off by telling him what has to be done...let him trouble shoot it with you and convince himself what needs to be done.

I talked to the tech at Sager and he will be cross-shipping to me a new video card which hopefully will solve this issue. I also ran 3dMark05 again and my score has dropped from 8400 when I first installed everything on my computer to 7500 so I'm guessing there really is something wrong with the card.
