my lap is actually on fire.

my friend swears he burnt his hand moving it. I BOUGHT A MONSTER!

is there any way to help this machine run cooler without buying anything or sacraficing performance? Is the heat eventually going to ruin it? I noticed that i experience pretty large fps drops when the two zeros beside the time turn to 1C but i have no idea what that means.

You really shouldn't have this thing on your lap.. very bad idea.. desktop replacements are ment.. well for the desktop... if your getting codes like 1C on your DJ panel.. those are error codes.. your not suppost to be seeing those.. not matter how hot mine gets I have never got error codes to start showing on the DJ panel.. remember Fn+F2 for the max FAN.. also use Riva Tuner to monitor tempretures.. and if your getting as hot as you say you are I would be reluctant to continue running it unless your sure the fans are working and rivatuner shows tolerante range tempretures...

BTW.. if your get to the point where the GPU throttles down to get tempretures under control you will loose FPS.. but you shouldn't ever reach the max GPU tempreture unless something is wrong with the system or you have it sitting on your lap blocking the cooling system..

    Laptops ARE NOT for laps.

They need to be used on a clean, hard surface at all times.... preferably on a notebook cooler.... namely the Zalman ZM-NC1000

If you use it on any soft or strange surfaces.... you will be blocking the venting on the bottom, which would cause the notebook to not get enough air and overheat it..... then overheating damage will occur.

It will be your fault for being so negligent if any damage from the overheating becomes permanent.

A notebook is only as good as the person that is taking care of it.

Second everything said thus far. Some of the smaller notebook computers are fairly safe for using on your lap (or anywhere else), but your monster is most certainly not. The CPU/GPU intake fan on the 5760 is inconveniently located in such a way that you'll block it regardless of where you place the notebook on your lap.

When I have to use my 5760 and I don't have a table, I always place a cooling pad (the Zalman NC1000 is really the best out there, but it isn't very portable) between the notebook and my lap. In this scenario, the fans in the cooling pad stay off, as the pad is simply providing a stable, flat platform.

When I traveled frequently, I would often do work while reclining in the hotel bed. I'd order a serving tray from the kitchen and use the tray as a "lap desk" for the notebook. Worked just as well.

Cooler + Fn+F2. This way, it won't get much hot.
