I was wondering if someone can post a copy of the latest Sager NP5790 bios. I sent an email to Sager a few days ago requesting it and they haven't responded back yet. I flashed over to a different version and forgot to select backup, so my copy of XP works fine but the OEM key for Vista won't work since I no longer have a Sager bios.![]()

Yeah, I've both spoken to a Sager rep over the phone and another over email and the response to both was that there is no current update for the bios, when I was only asking for the most recent. So seems like I'm out of luck speaking to them.

I myself have purchased a Sager M570RU back in early September, and have read these forums, even before my purchase. One thing I'm puzzled is that there is yet to be a BIOS update that addresses the fan toggle mechanism that was present in other notebooks notably the D900C/D901C. A feature that toggles between Max Speed or Auto Speed. Any representatives, or anyone in general would know of how to go about this. I'm sure the community as a whole would appreciate an update, while I have been content with my laptop this is the only feature that I feel is missing.

agreed it seems clevo/sager really rarely does anything to update these instead they release a updated version.. i.e. the 5790-5791-5792...

I thought the NP5791 did have a max fan feature, I remember using it on the review notebook I had. Which combination of keys are you trying? I think it's Fn + F10.
-
Nope....FN + F10 turns on or off the camera.
-
yeah i can not find it on my 5791 either.
-
No, there is yet a way to toggle the fans, and I similarly to others run into the problem of playing intense games and the laptop shutting itself off when not connected to the AC. So, out of curiosity who would be interested to actual writing a letter? Or perhaps bringing about awareness to Clevo that there are individuals who wish to have this feature? If memory serves me correct a similar effort was done for the D900C under these forums and there was actual success and was later implemented.

Unless Sager's policy changes, I don't think you will ever see them make a public release of their product's bios available for download from their site. Nor do I think you will you see them post what the latest revision numbers of the bios are for their products.
I realized this after spending about 30 minutes on the phone with Sager tech support trying to get a copy of the bios emailed to me so I could restore the bios in my 5790 after it was corrupted. According to Sager Tech support, the agreement they have with Microsoft prevents them from posting copies of their bios on their website for public download.
As most probably know, the product keys for Windows Vista which most OEMs use are keyed to the vendors bios ID. This was done to prevent someone from taking a copy of the Windows Vista disk that contains let us say a Dell OEM key that was provided with your Dell laptop and installing that same copy of Vista on an HP laptop.
What Sager tech support told me is that if you have an OEM Sager copy of Windows Vista installed on your computer (which is what they want your serial number to check for) they will not provide you with the bios. You will have to return the laptop to them for a re-flash. They did indicate there was no fee charged for them to flash the bios and return it to me but I would have to pay the cost of shipping it to them. I wonder how much this service will cost a year from now when the system is no longer under warranty.
What this means is every product that Sager and supposedly any other vendor sells with Vista pre-installed will have to be returned whenever you need a bios update to resolve an issue.
From a company viewpoint to prevent a flood of request for RMAs whenever a bios update is released to them, by Clevo in this case, to fix a problem with the hardware they are selling, it is in their best interest to NOT publicly acknowledge that their might be a bios update available. If they made all of their customers aware there was a new bios update available to fix a problem they would be flooded with RMA requests and would have to individually flash each one and return them (postage paid) to their customers at their cost. I could see this costing them a lot of unexpected cash.
Be aware of this when buying any Sager product as well as any product from any other vendor. If I had been aware of it before I would have either bought the laptop from someone else, or made sure I bought it without Windows Vista installed. I would still recommend buying the Sager laptop but do not buy it with Vista pre-installed. Get the hardware from Sager if you like, and get the operating system software from someone else such as Newegg. The price is the same either way, you will just have to make two separate purchases instead of one. In the end you will be better off as later, if your laptop dies, you will be able to install the non OEM copy of Vista on a different computer.
The funny thing about all of this is you can go to Dell and HP website, which are much larger distributors of PCs products, and download the latest copy of the bios for any of their products.
The lesson learned, I will never again buy an OEM copy of an OS pre-installed on a system. -
Why in the world would anyone want the 5791 fans to MAX? They`re loud as a train even so.
I should know, I have one! -
wow that sucks so there will never be a new bios released for the 5791 i guess then. that really sucks bad. ill try asking xotic
-
Anyway, all I did was just re-enter the product key on the sticker at the bottom of the laptop and it activated fine. You might want to try that, if you haven't already. -
you can also simply click activate by phone. call the 800 number and enter the code vista gives you then the nice prompted voice will give you number to put in the boxes and then click next and it will be activated again
-
For somebody who`s not in the US that would cost a lot.
So are you prompted to enter the code anywhere or how do you re-activate it?
Cause I plan to get back to Vista in the summer... -
All I did was just 'change product key' and entered my old (original) key, and it worked fine. *shrugs*. -
the phone number is different depending on what country you select, they have a free one for most countries
