I have successfully set up dual booting with XP Pro 32 bit and Ubuntu 7.10 64 bit. I was able to get the video working with the nVIDIA closed drivers, but am unable to get the audio working. Has anybody been successful with setting up Ubuntu on a 5790 or 5791 (32 bit or 64 bit)? If so, can you steer me towards the correct drivers to use?

    Thanks.

I also should be getting my 5791 on Tuesday and hope to get ubuntu 7.10 going on it. I found the Tuxmobil website week or so ago that has a section on clevo notebooks.
Here is the url for the m570ru, the first half is in French but the it has an English translation at the bottom. Granted he was using Debian and KDE, but it should be pretty similar. It doesn't look like he had the same issues with his sound so I don't know if it will help at all. I can't test anything out until I get mine in the next couple of days.

I assume your sound works when you boot into windows though?

    Sound works fine in XP....

I created a live cd of the 64 bit version of ubuntu, to take advantage of the 64 bit capability of my t7500 processor....picked the option to install and dual boot and installed the grub bootloader....am using the restricted nVIDIA drivers and am getting 1440 x 900 resolution (I have the 1650 matte screen). I just downloaded vmware workstation 64 bit to install in ubuntu and have installed xp pro there so that I can run my software that won't run in ubuntu or with crossover. Depending on how it all works out, I might wipe my XP partition and just use ubuntu (with vmware for the odd stuff). I have also installed crossover trial and am able to do my steam games (CSS and HalfLife 2: Garrys Mod with no problem..might have to license crossover also.

UPDATE: I finally just booted up with the livdcd again and removed the swap and the ext3 partitions...then created them again, and installed again. Now video, sound, and wireless networking are working again (although I am still trying to get my wep encryption working...I can see access points in my neighborhood (including my own)...just can't connect yet).

Are you still having problems with the headphone jack? I just got my 5791 today and it is amazing...

In ubuntu I opened up the alsa volume control and fiddled around with it a bit,

The PCM and Surround volume controls affect the headphone jack and the other ones like Front, Center, LFE control the speakers in the notebook.

Also "Front Mic Boost" will give you buzzing if you don't turn it off while you're not using it.

The main volume control by default for me in the task bar only controls the "Front" volume control. Which is fine for me since I use headphones most of the time anyway I can just keep it muted. I might try to tweak it a bit to make it easy though.

My next mission impossible is to get my fingerprint scanner and camera to work... After playing around with the fingerprint scanner in windows, I want it so bad in Linux!

    Ubuntu is great!

    Cheers!

According to Upek, they do not have any linux software for the fingerprint reader. However, if you go to their download section you will find a SDK kit for linux....I guess someone will have to use that to try to port the capability to linux.

Can you tell me if you loaded anything extra? My sound is not working anymore, and I am wondering if it might be software that loaded on when using Automatix. Did you load Automatix?

I can't think of anything else I installed that would have changed anything...

I didn't use Automatix. I don't think that Automatix installs anything that would affect the sound does it?

You might check that you are using Alsa instead of OSS

Double click on the speaker in the taskbar, and then go to file>change devices and make sure HDA Intel (Alsa mixer) is selected.

Then click on edit>preferences and make sure the Playback tab is selected and just check mark every single sound option to add the volume controls. Then just turn everything up and play some sound and start fiddling with the controls to see what they all do.
