Hi guys, I ordered a sager 5791 with the 8700m (which I am extremely excited about) from xoticpc about two weeks ago and it just arrived today; however, I am trying to decide if I should send it back for now and await the release of the 8800m.

I've been waiting since the beginning of summertime for the release of the 8800m, but became fed up and decided to order the laptop two weeks ago. Only a few days after I ordered, even before the laptop arrived, news of the 8800 was leaked and, to add to my dismay, there was a substantial price drop for the 5791.

I have a 20 day period to send my laptop back for any reason, and I don't mind waiting for the 8800m if it is going to be released soon. If it comes out in november will it take months for the laptops to ship with the card? I hear it will most likely cost around $500 to purchase the card stand-alone, and I assume it will be much cheaper to simply order a computer with the 8800m than to buy it by itself.

Anyone have any advice, regrets, or thoughts on the subject? Are there any other good options? Have you guys ever had any experience with graphics card step-up programs for newly purchased laptops (I guess upgradeable graphics cards in laptops haven't been around for too long though, huh?)? Ok, thanks for your time!

To be honest if you are that worried about the 8800M send your laptop back and get a new one. When the card comes out.

i don't think the 8800M will actually be available for quite a while, maybe December. just because it is released on Nov. 19, it doesn't mean it will ready to put in your notebook, although i wish...

i called sager today to check on the status of my new keyboard coming out to me. i asked about this and they basically agreed with what justin said. they estimated nearly 10-12 months at least the guy i asked said that. he also said that the first systems using ths card will most likely be the larger sager systems not the 5791 or whatever is comprable at that time

I've got the 8700 in my 5791, and to be honest I'm sort of blown away at the performance I've been getting. I'm able to overclock it 100mhz on the core and memory w/ nary an increase in heat. I get 30+ fps in a number of games at 1440x900 w/ almost all settings set to high. (Bioshock, UT3, Hellgate)

I don't see a need for an 8800 for a while. That's just me, though.

I think Justin said 2008... to mean January or February...

Nvidia announced that these cards might ship as soon as the 3rd or 4th week of November... but they probably won't reach consumers until later in this Winter.

"I've been waiting since the beginning of summertime for the release of the 8800m, but became fed up and decided to order the laptop two weeks ago."

I am in the same boat and I am inches away from ordering the NP9261 with a single 8700 until these new gpus come out.

" If it comes out in november will it take months for the laptops to ship with the card? I hear it will most likely cost around $500 to purchase the card stand-alone, and I assume it will be much cheaper to simply order a computer with the 8800m than to buy it by itself.

It may seem cheaper but that is only because you have paid for the current card that you have right now. I don't think there will be much of a price difference in purchasing the card as a stand alone upgrade, or an upgrade when customizing your order. If it was me, it wouldn't bother me to drop the extra money when the new card is available. And since it wont be for a while we, you could save up the cash for it if you wanted. But...not everyone likes to pony up extra cash which is totally understandable.

"Anyone have any advice, regrets, or thoughts on the subject? Are there any other good options?"

Again, if it were me, I would be happy with the system that you ordered. If you are really worried about the card and do not need the laptop now then by all means send it back and wait. I may just order an NP9261 with a single 8700 now just because I need an upgrade soon. I am embarrased to say but my current rig scores 160 on 3dMark06....thats not a typo....160 baby!!! BLAZING! Scores aren't everything but performance is and I am beginning to need it more and more and my lappy just doesn't cut it.

I, like many have, contacted Justin and XoticPC and he informed me (in my own words) that it tenatively takes 60 days after the release date for newer GPUs to be installed in current (or future) products. So if the November 19th date is accurate then we are looking around the end of January. I cannot say for certain but I assume this is largley due to popular demand and shipping the product to the resellers in a quantity that can feed the need but also give the resellers some time to ensure the product will work in their current systems. Like take a month too work with the product and work out any initial kinks and then order a crap load so they have a supply setup for the demand and I am guessing these babies will be in high demand. Also consider that IF it is the end of January when these are available in some notebooks, it may even be february before your system is shipped. Like the 8700s. Taking orders in september but they didn't ship until October...so if you re-order basically, it may take longer from that as well.

I'll tell ya, I have been stuck in the stupid waiting game for over a year now (man...I just can't break the cycle!!!!) and guess what, I haven't purchased anything "just have to wait for that new thing....wait....1 more month something else too? Ok, just have to wait for that....Ohhhhh look at that item coming out...2 months? Ok I can wait..."1 year later..."Man my laptop sucks...I should by a new one. Ohhh just gonna wait for the video card." I already know what is going to happen lol. If I don't just buy something now then Clevo will announce another Monster laptop in like March/April/May that will beat the NP2961 and I will want that but then there will be a feature coming for it in like June and I will wait, then some new GPU will come out and I will wait until Oct again and so on...Anyone else have this problem? :)

My point is that you should feel solid about the purchase. If the video card is the only real component you are waiting for, just purchase it as an upgrade. The rest of the laptop is really nice! In the end you are spending a few extra bucks but the trade off is that you actually have a nice laptop that will perform very well instead of not having it for a few months and possibly getting stuck in the cycle like me.

Now if I can heed my own advice I may just buy the NP9261 and get two cards later.......Someone punch my arm and make me do it! :)

Sorry for the length, but I am tired and I rant a bit when I get tired.

In the end of the day you'll have a awesome system. Free yourself from the cycle man, its just good technology wether you buy it today or in a couple of months, nothing that deserves your anxiety.

Man, Jikeel, thanks so much for you're long post! I totally know what you mean, and you've made me look at the laptop in a whole new light! I guess I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and even the slightest doubt will nag away at me, but your advice has completely blown any doubt out of the water.

I might just wait and see if the 9series cards will be able to fit and upgrade then--there are a number of options available in the future, and I really dont want to wait again now that this baby is right in front of me :p. I haven't been able to test it out yet, but I'm sure I will be happy with it, compared to what I have now (which actually just broke a week ago, so I dont have anything right now :p). Thanks everyone for all of your advice too, perhaps the card will give me something to look forward to for christmas or my birthday.

Hope you're laptop comes to you speedily and safely Jikeel!
