That is a very thorough review, particularly from the more technical side. Thanks.

I will have to read it properly when I get home
but yes I think they are trying to gauge the performance increased gained from sli vs single card in a notebook
    which is good

although I dont quite understand some of their benchmarks.

when I ran the stress test on lost coast I got an average 142FPS on 1920x1200 with 8xaa 16xaf and everything on max
although I didnt have vsync on....hmmmm

anyway it definitely looked like it ran at full tilt, but then I can't see more than 60fps can I? :)

I need to see shots of internals on the 5793 now before I open mine up and invalidate the warranty :)

It's actually a rather interesting comparison (and worth the read - print it off for later if you can) - they compare the NP5793 with one 8800M to a _Dell MX1730 with two 8800Ms in SLi. All things considered, the NP5793 with a single 8800M holds up pretty well to the MX1730 with dual 8800M in SLi, although, of course, it's always behind - just not quite as far behind as you might expect.

The NP5793, unfortunately, only supports one GPU and so cannot run two 8800Ms in SLi.

Well, on average it is 66% behind, which is quite significant. Especially when you consider than, in Europe, you can buy a M1730 for more or less the same price as 5792/93.

I was quite interested in their noise comments, since that is my number 1 complaint regarding 5793. According to them, the Dell is virtually silent when browsing and doing non-graphic intensive work.

However much behind is not the point; I, at least, didn't expect to even come close. On the other hand, when the MX1730 is put back into the same league by having one 8800M disabled, the Clevo is then more or less equal to the MX1730. Basically, performance-wise, it's a wash.

As to noise, yup, that is still a big issue with a number of folks regarding the NP5793 - however, if you've been perusing the very long post regarding the firmware updates, Sager's engineers & coders have been very responsive to the complaints of owners and are working to mitigate the problem. I don't recall _Dell being that customer sensitive.

All in all, the systems are about evenly matched (in single GPU mode), suggesting that, by and large, you have to make your decision to go with a Clevo system or a Dell system based on factors other than technical performance. In other words, it's largely a matter of taste, and there's no real point debating who's "better" than whom.

I found it to be extremely informative about the lack of driver support for notebooks, although Nvidia is now offering beta drivers for the 7 & 8M series with the next release coming this April. It makes you wonder whether a desktop would have been a better option in this regard.

It's because it can hold SLI + another HDD + extra fat.

It is in the US, however in Europe (I live in London) the price difference is much smaller, in fact the M1730 is cheaper than 5792 that Rock sells.

M1730 is not being sold with a single 8800 so that is a bit of moot point, but I do agree that performance wise, in single GPU mode, they are more or less identical.

I have had the opportunity today to see a M1730 belonging to a friend, and my impressions are:

    * M1730 is much bigger and heavier, and the power brick is big; 5792/93 is much easier to carry around
    * M1730 is much much quieter when browsing, there is really no comparison. It is almost completely silent; my 5793 is loud by comparison even with the latest firmware in "slow fan" mode
    * the speakers of M1730 are significantly louder and better than 5792/93. Not an important point if you use headphones, though

Which is a good thing because with 2 GPUs this baby would scream even louder.
I only wished somebody with a 5793 chasis would post a video so that I can compare noise levels.

I must be missing something because my 5793 in really quiet. Every now and then I hear the fan kick on for a few seconds.
The one thing, to me, is the brick, it is quite large.
The laptop itself is quite light for it's size.

Not to hijack the thread, but I did have a question about the 5793 for any current owners who might read this... I will be writing a lot of term papers on any system that I get, so the keyboard quality is important (so is gaming ability, which is why I'm considering a Sager). What is your opinion about the keyboard quality, is it something you could see someone using extensively?

no worries mtnbiker, this is the best laptop keyboard I have used so far
and to know that in the past I have plugged in external keyboards, because the notebook keyboard wasnt up to my 100wpm typing speed,
this keyboard is springy nice and sturdy.

would recommend it to anyone, yes I am typing away merrily on here with minimal backspace presses :)

That's good to hear. It LOOKS sturdy and substantial in photos, but it's nice to have user feedback too. Thanks.
