I got my email from Xotic stating that my 5796 order was on hold because there are no more Blu-Ray drives available.

I check their website, and sure enuff they have been removed from the configurator.

I did find it strange that they were still available in the NP9262 configurator.

I was told they have no idea when they will get more, so I need to either change my order to a standard drive or wait until who knows when.

Did this happen to anyone else ? I ordered this thing in July, was waiting for the 9800GTX to come out, and by the time it does the Blu-Ray drives are gone.

Is there a problem with Blu-Ray drives on the 5796 ? Anyone have any information when that option will become available again. One of my requirements for my system was a mobile Blu-Ray Movie playback device, so this is a real killer for me. I am considering installing the drive myself after the fact. This is just a standard slim-line optical sata drive correct ?

you can get it with a standard drive, and buy your own off of Newegg and put it in yourself... tells you how simple it is in the User's Manual. ;)

then you will have a backup optical drive if anything were to happen to the Blu-ray drive.

The 5796|M570TU uses a SATA drive for the optical bay, I believe the 9262 isn't using SATA. This can also explain the shortage....

I wanted that option as well but didn't want to wait.
I didn't want to wait for the GTX either but low and behold, here they are
just 3 short weeks later....perhaps the Blueray drive will along any day now..

So why doesn't your reseller just send you the computer with a normal drive and then send you the blu ray drive later on?

Ya there was a thread about this a few weeks ago. Justin for Xotic confirmed there was a shortage and currently there is no ETA on them. He did say you would be able to purchase the drive after you have your system and that it is simple plug and play.

I think I'll just install it myself then, been waiting a long time for this puppy. Can't let a little thing like installing my own Blu-Ray drive derail me now.

The Sata/IDE optical does help explain why there is a difference between the 9262 and the 5796. I was worried there was some kind of issue, but sounds like just a shortage problem that I can get around.

I guess the new Montevina notebooks have transitioned the optical drive interface to SATA... I do not know why thats needed since optical drives in notebooks (as well as desktops) do not exceed 100MB/s.

In any case, if the interfaces changed, then that would explain the shortage of the new SATA interface drives... which kinda sucks.

That drive should work in the 5796, though the bezel won't be flush with the case
