Just built a barebones 5797 from RJ Tech with a qx9300.

After running Wprime 1024, the cores stabilized at 86/86/88/86. Is this too warm compared to other peoples?

    I idle at ~ 32C.

I used OCZ freeze thermal paste, and reapplied it since I thought a may have messed it up the first time. My temps are the same however. I used a rice/grain sized drop on each heat spreader in accordance with the OCZ instructions.

    are you overclocked at all?

is the heatsink fully contacting the cpu?

    seems very warm to me...

    Not overclocked.

From the way the past looked when I pulled the heatsink off, it was fully contacting, maybe i'll grab a shim though anyway.

32C is a fine temp to be at.

    whats the max temp?... 88C?

that is a bit on the hot side.

Make sure your heatsink is secured... and make sure you cleared out the vents of dust (which you cannot see without a flashlight shining through the vents.

86*C at factory clocks is very hot. Adding a shim won't help either. What is your laptop sitting on, how long did you run wprime, and what is the temperature in the room?

i must be using too much thermal grease. I just reseated the heatsink using ever-so-slightly less grease and my temps were:

79/80/79/81 under the same conditions as the first post.

I'm gonna re-clean and seat again using less grease and see if I can get it around the 70-ish mark.

I've never installed a processor before and used the included thermal gunk, max temps after 1/2 an hour of GTA4 were mid-high 60's, overclocked.

The thermal paste included with OEM processors is actually not bad. Try running wprime or dual Orthos and record the temps. And when you replace the thermal paste with OCZ Freeze, record the temps again.

Ok, now that I can finally post again (the 404 errors have been constant since last night).

I it ended up actually putting on too little paste this entire time (I reduced it again a little like I said I would, and my temps went through the roof).

I also said "screw the OCZ method of a drop in the center and let the heat sink pressure spread it out".

I've always used the spreading method and did so this time too.

    Now my temps are fine.

Full 1024 Wprime and max temps are 72/72/71/72

Idle temps are between 30-32 on all cores.

I'll have my build/install/review post up in a day or so. I took pictures through the whole process like I promised I would...

    Cheers!

Off topic just for a mement:

I have had the same problem with the 404 errors...I thought it was just my connection(well, I guess we could both have bad connections)...maybe not now that i see im not the only one.

Is that the website crashing? or are they changing something, because that is the most annoying thing ever

Max temps dropped about 3C with the OCZ, I replaced the GPU paste as well. Was it worth it? Eh, not really but I at least learned how to take apart the heatsink, etc.

Here's after a level of Warhead:

mine goes up to the mid to high 70s while playing GTAIV - overclocked

Should I change the cpu's thermal paste?

I have a 4 year old laptop sleeping all the time... so i can practice applying the thermal paste in it first :D (as it will be my first time)
