    Hi,

So i've been reseating the heatsink a lot of times and i've noticed that the grooves on the heatsink screws are getting worn out.
I was wondering if there's any way to get a hold of replacement screws? Preferably a large pack so i won't have to bother with this issue in the future.
Do regular hardware shops carry these? What size should i look for?
I'm hesitant to unscrew the heatsink and go compare at a hardware shop because if they do not carry the screws i might end up not getting them back on.

I also have the first XFX 5870 that came on the market for my desktop and the screws there have also taken a lot of beating. I contacted XFX a couple of months ago but they told me they couldn't supply me with new ones.

What worries me is that they are so small and i can't recall ever seeing these kind of screws at any hardware shop.

Any help and tips are appreciated!

Your reseller is your best bet. Worst case, you may have to buy a new heatsink.

Im assuming clevo is the company that you bought your laptop from so you are most likely going to have to get it from there.

So there's no chance a hardware shop could provide me with similar screws?
I might as well go over there and check it out though.

Well, i bought it from kobalt computers.
I will send them an email and see what they say.

I looked at my desktop 5870 and it looks like i need a new retention bracket in order to 'change' the screws. might just buy an after market cooler then.

I would be surprised. When I needed a bunch of different screws for my last water cooling build, the hardware stores had screws that were close, but not perfect. This isn't really a situation where "close" is a good idea. Couldn't hurt to look, just make sure they're exact.

My god, this is ridiculous. Grab yourself a pair of calipers and a head for your shoulders and measure your screws. Oh wait, I already did that for you. The four screws that hold down the arms on the GTX 285M and MR 5870 heatsinks for the W8x0CU are size M1.6x4mm. And if I can recall correctly, the legacy M570TU and M860TU heatsinks also use this size. All of the smaller metric screws, which all OEM notebook manufacturers use nowadays, have the same thread pitch so don't worry about it.

Well aren't you a barrel of fun.
Thanks for the help but next time you decide to be an internet tough guy, you might want to reconsider because it only makes you look like an idiot.

I suggest you do not start anything here lainx. Soviet is always like this. You'll grow to enjoy his humor.

Right, i'm not trying to "start anything". I was just stating a fact.
I understand some people have the need to be condescending on the internet, hell, i'm like that most of the time.
It has nothing to do with humour though, it's purely an elitistic trait that often is enhanced through the wonders of internet. It's always nice to feel superior and important.

Sure, i could've gone on and measured the screws myself (if i had the tools, which i don't), but frankly the reason i posted it was because i wanted to know about where i could get a hold of new screws.
Could i have searched the forums a little more? Probably.

Thanks to the post though, i now know where i can find some. But i'm not sure if my initial post warranted an insult.

Nope. It's strictly for the humor. No elitism in this one this time. Nice try though.

    Noted.

Anyways, i might as well ask here while i'm at it.
Since i do not own a calliper, would you soviet, or anyone else know the sizes of the different thermal pads on the 5870?

I believe 2mm pads are what is used, they are rather thick, but i believe thinner ones can be used, and that is what i intend on doing when i get them.
