I am looking to purchase a new laptop very soon. I have decided on the P170em and have not yet decided on a company to purchase it from (exoticpc, Malibal, Mythlogic). I was wondering if anyone knows if I can get a 120Hz screen from any of these vendors. Also, more importantly, is there a big difference between the 60 and 120hz screens as far as gaming is concerned?

Everything is way smoother with the 120Hz screen.

The only thing holding you back is that no one has tested the 120Hz on the P170 EM yet. No idea why, I might have read it somewhere, but can't tell where.. lets hope someone has a better answer than me :)

if your looking at the 15.6" model, i have actually overclocked the display up to 90hz with no artifacts. and is way smoother, so if you can get the 120hz display, but if not, you can overclock it :).

We dont have 120hz screens available yet but hopefully some day. No ETA at this time on when though. The 120hz will look much smoother then 60hz and will also let you game up to 120fps, granted your hardware can support it.
The previous 120hz screens we offered also had 3D capabilities.

Wow how did you do that? How stable was it? Interesting in knowing the procedure as long as its not too risky.

Apparently if you have an nvidia graphics card you can set custom hertz, however I don't know how effective this is and I'm sure theres a greater chance to kill a pixel but then again I've never tried it so I can't say for sure. You should pm the OP of that thread.

As long as other various parameters are good, like no aggressive AG, or ghosting / blur, 120hz is alot better. I am in the same boat as you, but I am pretty dead set on 120hz. I hope Sager/clevo sellers are pushing hard to get info on this because I will spring for the first laptop that fits the bill. I was hoping it would be a sager/clevo but if it is not, then so be it. Right now the alienware has it, but I am not a fan of their design, however I will overlook that if a sale hits that puts the price below 2000.

ASUS G75VW-DS73-3D has 120hz display. you can find it at xoticpc. It will run about 2k stock.

Ya I looked at that one but it has 1 major flaw and 1 minor flaw. The main flaw is I cannot game on it because the keyboard will not accept SHIFT+E+SPACE key combo, which means I must either not jump, ski/run/crouch, or move forward. Kind of a ridiculous sacrifice I must make. No point in dropping 2k on a laptop if you cant game on it.

The other issue is a prefer a glossy screen, this has a matte finish with makes whites sparkle a bit. Though of the antiglare coatings it is not a very bad one.

whats this shift e space you talk about ?

the only thing holding me back from the clevo/sager and thinking of the asus is the claimed loud fans on load. The asus is meant to ace in this dept and soon will get a nice 7970m to match the rest of the package.

The asus laptop and I assume all laptops lack a key gaming feature called NKRO, or 6KRO. This means that it is possible that any particular combination of keys simply will not work on any a laptop since you often have no options for different keyboards.

I tested both the G74, and G75 in best buy and both of them failed to allow me to press all 3 of the keys I listed at the same time. Since I and many gamers use ESDF configs this means the keyboard is useless to us. Forward and jump are 2 of the most important keys in FPS games.

If you are a looking at clevo / sager, I cannot say much in their favor, I did in fact stop into mythlogic a month or so ago and tried thier keyboard. It failed a variety of tests and overall was pretty bad. I do not know if the MSI replacement keyboard they offer is better. This I cannot remember the specifics of the ESDF cluster because the keyboard failed the braille test.

The sad fact is almost no one talks about this or reviews keyboards for laptops in any usefull detail. This is incredibly sad because unlike desktops laptop users are more or less married to they keyboard that comes with the laptop.

so pretty much no laptop user on earth can jump forward in a game ? im sure we would of heard more about this?

let me try on my laptop now...

yup, i can jump forward using the W+Space bar.. no problem for me on the keyboard and i can use w+d+space for jump forward and manoeuvre too

i guess im missing what your saying? the combo you mentioned i have never used (from memory?) if you think about it most decent gaming mice have perfectly placed buttons to map so im sure the problem your facing can be worked around quite easily

my current laptop is an oldish 2009 Packard bell hgl1 running linux mint 13 nicely!

Its about as budget as you can get in every way :) im sure the latest £1500 (2000$) new laptops have better keyboards

Would there be a difference between the two screens if you were playing a game at 50 fps?

Less strain on your eyes on the 120hz screen as far as I am aware

    im a bit confused tbh..

120hz screen with lets say a slow response time of 12ms grey to grey and a 60hz screen with a rapid 2-4ms grey to grey response (pixel change from one state to another)

im assuming the ghost trail / smear of the 120hz led would actually for a worse experience for games than the 60hz (exaggerated by the need to change pixel state faster?)

also if you take a proper 60fps game and use msi afterburner server tool frame lock/cull then you can actually run 60fps without tearing with vsync off as all frames over 60 are not drawn and using this tool makes game look very smooth on 60hz like an optimised console game. So there is one of the other benefits of 120hz gone ( i assume adaptive vsync is similar on the latest nvidia)

what if the 60hz panel is a better contrast, black level and colour fidelity ? again the 120hz will look worse even if its 'smoother'

I think there is a lot more to a good display than 'HZ' my bluerays look fantastic on my 1080p projector and they are locked at 24hz !

I would want to know the contrast/black / colours and response of the panel before blindly choosing 120hz

Yes you are confused. The best thing to do would be to google, NKRO (any key roll over), and mechanical keyboard. You can find really in depth explainations of alot of things at places like geekhack.

You can also read this post I made in the Samsung Series 7 gamer thread.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sam...hd-7970m-geforce-gtx-675m-55.html#post8536427

The main thing you are missing is, 1 you falsely assume that paying more gets you better stuff in everything. This is false in every business but a common misconseption that allows companies to exploit customers. Most of the time you actually pay alot of a few key features and get screwed on everything else. For instance you pay big money for name brand clothes like A&F but its made in the same SE asian factories as clothes from JC Penny.

I have used $5 and >$100 keyboards that all have these issues.

Second thing you have wrong is you seem to assume the problem will be the same on all keybaords, it is not. Every different keyboard made in a different factory will have different layouts that result in different combinations of keys not working. For instance I cannot press SHIFT, E, C at the same time on my laptop. But the SHIFT, E, SPACE combination works fine.

@Pubfiction I believe the term you are looking for is called keyboard ghosting. It is in just about any laptop keyboard at this time. You can test it here https://www.microsoft.com/appliedsciences/antighostingexplained.mspx
and frankly, no, gamers are not married to the laptop keyboard for gaming. We actually use gamepads as well. Here are 2 prime examples:
The Logitech G13 Newegg.com - Logitech G13 USB Advanced Gameboard
and the Razer Nostromo (which I actually use) Newegg.com - RAZER Nostromo Black 16 fully programmable hyperesponse keys Normal Keys USB Wired Gaming Expert Gaming Keypad
Basically, these items make relying on a keyboard nearly obsolete save for required typing for communication.

As far as your claim of all keyboards having some issues, go try a Logitech G15 if they are still available or the G510, heck even the Razer keyboards shouldn't have issues.

I really prefer not to get confused with the term ghosting which is a newer term for jamming. The feature you are looking for in a keyboard is the key rollover number. If you read the link I had above I explain a lot of it.

Specifically talking about ghosting gets you into a poorly defined role as a keyboard. This is more or less a marketing trick. You say, hey my keyboard is antighosting, but what does that mean? It means you increased the key rollover, but you didn't have to do it across the whole board, you might only do it in the WASD cluster, you might do it for 8 keys or 16 keys, did you do it as 3KRO or 6KRO or 18KRO? In fact almost all keyboards are antighosting because they increase the rollover capabilities with the modifier keys. But they often do that at expense of the rest of the keyboard so then you end up with a nasty situation like the ASUS G75 where a really important key combination for ESDF gamers does not work. Yet on almost all cheapo and laptop keyboard I have ever used that key combination works. So to me it is clear that ASUS made a call that everyone WASD games and said screw the rest of the keyboard, that means they lost my sale.

When a keyboard states it is X key rollover then that means it applies to the whole board and you are sure to be able to input X keys at the same time anywhere. Most keyboard are at least 2KRO, but I think gaming notebooks should be 6KRO. There is no question about what it does or funny engineering like in "anti ghosting" keyboards.

Also if you read my link you would see I obviously know that you can purchase keyboards with NKRO, I actually own 4 of them. But I disagree with you 100%, I am married to my keyboard on a laptop. The entire point of a laptop is to create a mobile devices that does everything you need in the most convenient package possible If I need to lug around a keyboard then the laptop is failing at its purpose. And if I was going to inconvenience myself well then, sure, I could do all sorts of things like remap all my keys to WASD etc...But I and many people don't want to do that we want to be able to use our laptop keyboard. And really it is not much more expensive to get 6KRO. Shoot you can buy a rosewill mechanical keyboard with NKRO and cherry mx switches, that is very high quality for $80. Surely you can make a cheapo laptop dome switch keyboard for way less than that.

At the end of the day it comes down to 1 consumers educating themselves and 2 competition. Right now I cannot get a 6KRO keyboard on any laptop, at least no one makes that clear in the specs. But I can tell you that the samsung series 7 gamer does not appear to fail any of my rollover tests. So regardless of what excuses people make for any laptop those who care have an option and the other companies should start thinking about being competitive in this space, really I doubt it adds more than $5 to a keyboard.
