Sorry for making a thread regarding a silly question, but here goes:

Will it be possible to retroactively install a GTX 660M on the P170HMx or is it too early to tell?

Some info revealed it is highly possible, but there are still several months to wait.

So say it will be possible to upgrade it *knocks on wood*, will it be something a normal user could do? (Never opened up a laptop before) or will I have to send it in to someone more proficient?

If all you need is the card (and heatsink), its easy peasy to do yourself.

Lovely. Can I use my existing heatsink or will I have to get a new one?

We need to wait and see....probably new heatsinks will be required.

Also, if you do the upgrade yourself, be sure to put some dentist gloves on, work slowly and carefully and buy a good cooling paste to put on the new videocard! Cooling paste is very important.

Damn, absolutely right - forgot about that. But there have to be some kind of gloves if you dont wanna get fingerprints all over the place. I know how greasy the fingers of excitement can get and getting ridd of these fingerprints is usually very hard work and involves loads of cotton pads...

Will I be able to upgrade to a future nvidia card if I have an amd one currently? Is it just a heatsink difference?

I heard the mobos are different for nVidia/AMD chips. You may upgrade but to a compatible AMD chip

That should not be right. To my knowledge, people have replaced the GTX 280M with the HD Mobility Radeon 5870 in the D900F back in the day. I could be wrong, but they all use the MXM 3.0b board, so it should be all compatible...

Yes make sure you get the heatsink that is designed for the new video cards. It is rare that you can just use your existing heatsink on the new card.

The bottom line is get a upgrade kit (this includes the card the heatsink and new screws) :)

I asked a couple resellers recently and that is the info I got... it would be wise to check with them if you're planning to upgrade chips from one company to another.

I exchanged the HD6970M card for GTX580M (in P150HM). Both heatsinks are almost no different, except for a single lot number.
    Everything works perfectly.

If I'm not mistaken, that only applies in the P170HM model. Even then I think a bios update should fix that problem.

I'm sure they will. Might have to wait a bit longer for the 7970 though.
Hopefully the 28nm chips from both Green and Red will be 75w. Wishful thinking?

There was rumors that ticked a lot of NV fans off about NV going to first release the junk or lowest end 600 desktop and 6**m series and later once they get good bins release the mid to high end cards. They have major issues with manufacturing currently and optimal bins.

That would explain the junk 610m ~ 640m listed. Maybe they are for the new Apple laptops, I doubt anyone in their right mind would use anything below 650m in their low end gaming laptops. Only Apple would.

Could not get any good info about the amd7***m cards. Everyone expects the 7070m or 7090m to be available closer to march / ivy bridge time or just after for summer 2012.

With Thailand under water and hd's / other parts from there not being delivered gpu progress might slow down somewhat.
Asus runs out of hd's in end of Nov 2011. So it is a mad rush to move fabrication and source needed parts for manufacturing.

Even if NV / AMD get good bins it will have to wait for the rest of the parts and delay testing but might results in actual decent card this time round r a more mature product. :D

Make sure you stock up on hd's.

I might be willing to wager, that any 600M currently listed in the driver package is going to be a rebrand.

Has anybody confirmed that Nvidia next gen mobile GPUs will used Kepler or not? If they are still Fermi based I think I have to wait for the 700m +_+.

Unless they do a 28nm Fermi chip I think you are in the clear. Word on the interwebs is that it will be a die shrink.
