Currently, I have the stock 280M in my Clevo W860CU and have been looking for an upgrade. After browsing these forums it seems 6970M is the way to go.

I was wondering if the 6970M is worth the upgrade or should I just wait and buy a new computer? I have the 820 and battery life isnt really an issue so i was hoping that for a few hundred bucks I could get a year or two more out of my computer.

I have also found out that in order for the 6970M to fit, I have to mod my heatsink. I was hoping someone could either sell me a pre-modded one or point me to some place that could.

    Thanks in advance

6970M is on pair with a GTX570M but that card still can cost from $320~ $565 while the 7970M only costs $480, well a brand new one. But I'm not sure if 285M > 6970M worths the $300+, however the performance boost isn't that great considering the GTX285M is quite close to a GTX460M.

If you buy 6970M from RJTech, the heatsink is included but it's not returnable and kinda expensive: Laptop Video Cards :: ATI Radeon HD 6970M 2GB Video Card for Clevo P150HM Laptop - R&J Technology, Clevo Barebone Notebook kits, Laptop and desktop system builder

Based on the picture showed in this article: The AVADirect Effect : AVADirect's W860CU: Mobility Radeon HD 5870 Vs. GeForce GTX 285M

The GPU part looks pretty much the same as P150HM.

Well I can find the 6970m on ebay for a little cheaper, the main problem is the heatsink. I'm just trying to figure out if the hassle of finding one is worth it

When looking at 3D Mark Vantage to compare scores the 6970M = 11385 vs 280M = 6328, that almost twice the performance. That wont equal double FPS but it will be a nice jump up. If you can get it for a good price go for it.

That sounds like an awesome improvement. Now, if there was only somewhere I could get the heatsink to go with it.

You will see a 2x increase in performance, easily.

You should contact Eurocom, as I know they've sold pre-modded heatsinks with some of their cards.

Love my card and it is only a marginal increase over the 6970M you will certainly see a fine improvement along with the additional features the card offers from DirectX11. If it is cheap go for it. As above pick up a heatsink or a deal that comes with one rather than modding it.
