Hi,
I ve recently got a P170hm with the 6970m with arctic silver 5, when i play games like crysis 2 or witcher 2 it goes up to something like 92-5C What should I do? But the thing is the Fan seems really quiet and not at full blast.... anyone know whats wrong with it? CPU cools just fine max is 70sC
-
try to repaste with ICD7.its the best paste out there.what room temp u have?
-
ICD 7 cool, I think the room temp is about 24C. nut when idel its about 45C so I think its mostly to do with the fan not spinning fast enough when needed..
Is it quiet common for this card to run moderately fast. I mean I can turn the fan to max using fn 1 but its got the pulsing bug.... any other options?? -
also what BIOS and EC/KBC u have??my 6970m idles at 40 celsius and full load goes 75-76 depends what game i play!!my room temp is 25.5 celsious..
-
i have the 1.01.02 bios with 1.00.03 ec/kbc. thats some awesome temps
-
update with the BIOS V 1.01.06 and EC/KBC V 1.00.11 from here
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/416916-clevo-bios-thread.html
i have the same bios and EC.i didnt update with lastest bios cuz i had some low bench scores.BIOS V 1.01.06 works great along with EC/KBC V 1.00.11. -
does it fix the heat issue?
-
it fixes the fun cycle problem!!!
-
Awesome, would that help with lowering my temp?
-
-
No I have the arctic silver 5. someone also told me that fan control on the 6970m is controlled by the V bios. what do you think?
Also I ve contacted my reseller and he had no idea about this bios problem untill today nor did he know the fn + function..... -
the fan control as i know is controlled via the EC/KBC...
-
cool. is is also good to update the V bios if there is one?
-
no dont touch the V-bios just update the bios and the ec/kbc.also repaste the card and if u want lift the back of ur laptop 2.5mm.thats all..
-
Okay, I will wait for the reseller to come up with some kind of official bios but if they cant find anything which is going to be likely. I will try the bios from the forum. btw should i have any problems with using the bios from this site?
-
i update mine from the forum no problems with it!!!update those two i told u but read the instructions on the first page first!!!
-
okay will give them a try once the reseller contacts me!! thanks for answering all my questions! will let you know how it all goes
-
np man!!

Trinox: if your on a sager branded laptop and you swap to Clevo bios, you can never go back to a Sager bios. It would brick the laptop. I am not saying you shouldn't, but that is a very important aspect of doing it. It is in the 1st page directions that Johnny alluded to.
I would personally go with the IC7 and invest in a laptop cooler. The IC7 will drop temps 3-5c and the cooler another 4 (my tests did at least).
I run the Witcher 2 at 84c max (on a 6990m) - maybe those adjustments get you to similar levels too? Math works... -
-
-
Johny could you upload your original 6970M videobios?
-
https://rapidshare.com/files/4002921976/ORIGBIOS.ROM -
Why?
It enables custom fan table ; to make the fan speed % scale with temperature =] -
I am back again, just to check the current bios has TUN at the end of the number, is this clevo or sager??

-
cool awesome, is it possible that i might have a faulty 6970m?? also does the changing the catalyst drive increase temps??
-
my first two 6970m were faulty!!!my temps gone 99-100 celsious in 3 mins of gaming with my first one!!with my second the card broke after a month of use!!!sometimes yes the drivers can increase temps but not so much!!
-
I just contacted my reseller in Japan about the bios and he only discovered that there is a new one today...what a joke. I also told him about some 6970m being faulty with tempurature, he didnt know about that either. Now he has told me that I should not use the laptop and will have to take it to the shop
this sucks
-
-
looks like rage will have to wait a little longer
-
wish u good luck then!!!
did my best to help u!!
-
Yeah I thanks a lot for all the help man!

I own a Clevo p170HM with a 6970M (Dutch label BTO) since July 11.
Two weeks ago my notebook shut itself down all of a sudden and I started monitoring system temps. My gpu also went to 100 ish degrees C pretty quickly during gaming. When idling it quickly rose from 45 to 55 ish degrees C.
So I RMA'd it and according to BTO it was related to dust! Gave me the odd advice to put a vacuum cleaner on the gpu exhaust once a week! They cleaned my fans, repasted the Arctic Silver paste and put on a new BIOS version. Now my idle temp remains around 46 degrees C and while gaming gpu temps dont surpass 82 degrees C.
I still find it hard to believe that after two months the gpu fans already collected too much dust. But hey, 3 years warranty so let's see what happens from now on. -

It's not surprising considering how often those fans are spinning up, and that the intakes are on the bottom. If you're in even a moderately dusty environment, they'll suck up quite a bit of it. It's always a good idea to clean the fans/heatsinks fairly often. Considering it's quite easy to get to them and clean them, it's a simple task anyway
Repasting on the other hand shouldn't be necessary if it's done right the first time as TIM doesn't just "go bad".
Also, to keep your temps down- keep the machine on a hard level surface and possibly with the back end raised to help with ventilation. Most here note that it makes a pretty significant difference.
