did you overclock your 6970? Looks like it could be a fried GPU.
-
i didnt overclock no.........

Man, sorry to hear that. Looks like your gpu may be screwed. Went through the same thing twice myself. This is why I won't be buying any more AMD cards in the future. Nvidia may be overpriced but I've yet to run across any posts or threads regarding their parts crapping out.
-
its was my first time that i bough ati and its the last one......some opinions??is the card fried??
-
-
-
It´s defective. Had the same thing with TWO 6970m´s. Won´t buy any ATI card in near future, too. My GTX 485m may be expensive, but till now no problems...

Did you try resetting the CMOS by unplugging the AC adapter, laptop battery, and CMOS battery?
Also try re-seating the RAM and hard drives. -
-
There were some speculations about bad batches of the 6970m, maybe we got the cards from that batch... -
Maybe you got some leftover Nvidia stuff on your Windows install?
Try making a linux live cd / dvd distro and after you change the gpu boot that up.
Wont mess with your Windows installation as long as you dont start installing it.
My own HD 6970m runs rock stable @ 850 core and 1100 memory.
Wish you luck. -

It sounds strange for a card to crap out that fast.
I guess you got the proper heatsink, and the bigger powersupply (you do got the one without rubber coating?)
You could try a bios upgrade but i doubt it woulf fix it.
I own the bigger P170HMx. -

I raised the back of my Eurocom Racer about 1 inch and it makes a huge difference in temps. Mine could go over 100C gaming with it laying flat. Now it stays about 80C max and sometimes even lower. Couldnt belieive what a diff it made. Sounds like you been playin around a lot with that card. My motto is if it aint broke dont fix it. Where did you buy the GPU?
-
-
Yes. Exactly the same thing with both cards. One card did boot with screen at first but got black screen when booting in windows, but after some time, it stayed black completely.

That's odd that it would just die out of the blue like that. I've had my 6970m since May and have abused the hell out of it. But it keeps on like a champ. I constantly game at 870/1100. No issues yet *knocks on wood*.
-
i ll rma it back..probably they ll sent me a new one...maybe it was one from the bad batch of 6970m's...bad luck..
-
Well I don't think they have anymore 6970's. Unless they keep inventory just for RMA purposes. They may just give you a 6990m.

Tell me, how did you ran the GTX460M with AMD drivers?
Your 6970M did not start because you have not uninstalled the nvidia drivers. You need to insert the nvidia card, then uninstall all Nvidia drivers and then insert the AMD card and install the AMD drivers. -
That's not the problem, drivers are needed inside Windows. His card shows black screen, he cant see bios, he can't see anything at all, it's dead.
-
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
Maybe not dead...is something loose? Like a wire?
Mr. Mysterious -
You can't replace the nvidia card with AMD card without uninstalling the nvidia drivers.
-
-
I would get its either bios or hardware related error.
Hope the RMA works out. -
thx all for the help but i think my 6970m is dead..as Tirenz said the laptop does not boot.when i press the power button, the screen stays black. Does not show bios, no nothing.
-
I know but, did You uninstall the nvidia drivers before inserting the AMD card ?
-
-
If so, how did you manage to run the Nvidia card after crashing AMD cards with drivers from AMD. I tried this and it is not possible.
-
-
You couldn't do that at all, because the laptop would not boot.
There is no bios, no boot, nothing except a black screen. -
-
Again, drivers are not the issue here. You can have a working nvidia card, you can take it out, plug in a new amd card for the first time and boot into windows normally (with default windows drivers) or enter safe mode. A working card should show the bios screen when you press power button, a dead card doesn't. This card is dead.

Repasting only requires you to remove the component panel, unscrew the heatsink, remove it, clean off the old paste, add the new, and put it all back together. See this link for the guide posted by Theriko (in his sig)

What type of paste do you plan to use? I've included the links for applying IC Diamond or Arctic Silver below:

thanks a lot for fast replay !! i am looking for Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra ,but first- will consult in a shop.......
and again: is that not to late repaste??
it's not a "fried" ??? -
Anthony@MALIBAL Company Representative
It's exceptionally hard to fry a card because they've got measures in place to avoid that. -
