OK its summer in the southern hemisphere ( Australia ) and ambient temps are around id say minimum of 40C and my 6990M keeps shutting down after 15 minutes of bf3(or even TF2 which i believe is less demanding) temps reach something ridiculous , above 100C .
The Idle temps are at minimum 61C!![]()
Does this mean I had crappy paste job and need repasting? Using (Stock paste btw) or is it because of the ambient temps?
Cheers.
Oh yeah and i dont remember the Laptop crashing in winter but it did get up to around 96C max? i think

the shutoff point should be roughly 105 centigrade. The ambient temps for stock paste arent unheard of by any means, however laptop fans are going to be much more effective at cooling lower idle temps than load temps so i wouldnt base it off of that either. If your hitting the heat shut off after 15 mins i would say it definitely needs to be repasted, your ambient temps are high and all but not enough to cause that

It might be a combination of both, but I disagree with RugbyPlayer and would say that it's nearly all your ambient temps. Ambient temps of 40C are incredibly high when you consider that most people will be using their machines in air conditioned areas around 20C. Temps that high aren't helping the machine to cool itself, as the air it's pulling in to draw heat from the heatpipes is not significantly cooler than the heatpipes themselves. Therefore you only notice cooling at much higher idle and load temps than most people will.
Temperatures over 100C are definitely dangerous for the parts. We try to recommend that you never see the GPU go past 95C. Try propping up the back of your laptop and inch or two and using max fans with fn+1. Also be sure that you're using it on a hard flat surface (if you weren't already). If none of that helps, you may want to consider repasting- though while it may help, your ambient temps are the biggest problem. Most people idle at around 40C, but with 20C lower ambient temps. Hence, your 60C idle would not therefore be unexpected. -
i would agree that under 95 but really i would prefer under 85 just for comfort level. 105 degrees ambient temps will contribute, but when i was having sone heat issues i scoured the forums and google searches, and people with the m18x and stock paste were idling at over 60 degrees in whatever ambient temps they had, so a 60 degree idle given over 105 degree fereinheit ambient temps doesnt seem irregular or unexpected at all.
Stock paste to IC Diamond or arctic silver or the like usually give about a 5 degree drop on the said alienware machines, and i would think it may even compound in a clevo body because the cooling system from what i hear is better in clevos, its an expensive machine and paste is cheap but cards are not.
I would definately agree to looking into a cooler, but in the meantime repasting isnt a bad idea in the slightest -
Is there a good guide on repasting? I've taken the CPU, GPU coolers off a laptop before and want to know if there are any critical points I need to pay attention to as compared to doing a desktop CPU, or GPU.

The actual method you use to repaste depends on the type you use. For example:
Artic Silver: Arctic Silver, Inc. - Intel® Application Methods
IC Diamond: Application
Clean off the old paste with a cleaning kit like artic clean if you have it. Otherwise, 90% rubbing alcohol and a microfiber cloth work well also. -
notepal u3...........get one.

I actually am pretty satisfied with the temps on my CPU but I think my GPU could be better. I will just Google for a guide. thank you

OP
what temps were you getting before summer?
if you were getting much cooler gpu temps when your ambient temps were lower then anthony is right.
i live in a tropical country and ambient temps are definitely the biggest factor. during summer months i game only in a/c with the back propped up.
6990M overheating, Need a repaste?
