    Hi,

what are the normal clocks of the 7970m in desktop mode, ie. not being used at all. Only today did I notice the fans on the NP9170 to be really loud for the first time, I've had it a year. Checked with MSI afterburner and it's going full speed when I'm doing nothing with no 3D programs of any kind on. 850 core 1200 mem. This can't be normal.

I managed to get it to 450 core 300 mem, is this the normal desktop usage mode? I don't think it is but it's better than when I first turned it on.

Checked with a power meter and it's drawing 50-60 watts at the socket when in the past it would be 20-30w. Definitely think something is not right. Can anyone help?

GPU utilization is a solid 30%.

edit: uninstalled all AMD drivers and the power draw is back to 26w as expected. What could possibly be using the GPU?

check what kinda processes are starting with windows, maybe one of them is using ur gpu and keeping it from going to idle clocks @300 core, 150 mem.

450/300 is low 3D or active 2D mode, for example when watching flash videos in the browser.

    Adobe...

SysInternals makes some good stuff. Well done in figuring it out!
