Hi guys,
I want to upgrade from windows 8.1 to windows 10 on my clevo p170em notebook.
My 7970m graphics card died about a year ago, so all this time I've been running my laptop on just the integrated Intel graphics 4000 chip.
Now here comes the problem:
When I run the upgrade utility from windows to upgrade to windows 10. The installation gets stuck at 34% because at that point in the proces, windows tries to install the 7970m drivers which makes the system fail and freeze up.
So I removed the 7970 from my laptop and tried to run the setup again. But now, with the card removed, the laptop won't boot at all. All the indicator lights start blinking and the laptop shuts off. Probably because the bios won't allow the laptop to boot without the 7970 in place.
Ive read about someone having the same problem in this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...m-is-dead-so-trying-to-use-just-intel.805020/
What can I do to install windows 10 without the 7970m?
I really appreciate your help.

Its possible its trying to launch in SG mode where the integrated graphics drives the screen despite not being used for games and such.
If you can get to BIOS, I would try and see if you can switch it to IGP or w/e your BIOS equivalent is. -

There is no switch on the em.

Its shutting down because it cant find the temp sensor for the GPU.
Reinstall the GPU then during the install process when it asks if you want to connect to the internet, decline that so it can finish installing. You're better off not letting windows 10 install drivers anyway and just do it yourself off the manufacturers website after the install.
Hope you get it going.Prostar Computer likes this. -
I can install windows 8.1 without a problem because 8.1 doesn't have the drivers for the 7970m embedded in the windows installer. So I could install the driver manually after windows 8.1 was successfully installed. In my case I just left the 7970 driver uninstalled.
Any other ideas?Last edited: Aug 2, 2018KY_BULLET likes this. -

The way I see it i've got 2 options:
1: stick with windows 8.1
(my USB 3.0 external HDD malfunctions on windows 8.1, so I rather not.)
2. Put the card in the oven with the risk of destroying it completely and making my laptop useless, even with windows 8.1
This laptop has only given me **** the past years. Man, I wish i've spend my $1800 on a desktop back then.
If someone has any other options, than i would love to hear them
Thank you guys for replying. -

Can you upgrade in another machine and move it over?

Does it have to be an upgrade install? What if you install fresh from a bootable USB drive?

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!
@Aroc advised me to setup group policy rules in order to prevent Windows from installing the drivers of the 7970m. After setting that up the upgrade ran flawlessly!
I followed these steps:

Hopefully at some point you can get it fixed up
Good job in getting it sorted now though

If you don't need the mobility then it usually makes sense.

Just buy and install a HD5870M you can still game ( low settings ) and it will only cost you £50
7970m dead can't upgrade to windows 10
