Hello everyone! I have one quick question: if it ends up being officially true that the 7970m is actually missing a hardware feature that prevents it from performing as it should with 99% utilization, and that there is no possible software fix, will you keep the 7970m, upgrade to the GTX 680m, or downgrade to another card?

Note that if you downgrade, assume that you will either be able to sell your 7970m or get money back if you return back to your reseller.

Here is a quote explaining how Nvidia's version of Enduro works as it should (Optimus whitepaper download supplied by sha7bot: http://go.redirectingat.com/?id=525...ave-problem-p150em-7970m-5.html#post8817575):

    "Optimus Copy Engine
In order to utilize the software innovations of Optimus, the GPU requires a creative new hardware feature, known as the Optimus Copy Engine.
Optimus avoids usage of a hardware multiplexer and prevents glitches associated with changing the display driver from IGP to GPU by transferring the display surface from the GPU
frame buffer over the PCI Express bus to the main memory-based framebuffer used by the IGP.
This occurs when an Optimus Profile indicates the application requires the GPU to be enabled.
The key to performing the display transfer without negatively impacting 3D performance is the Optimus Copy Engine.

The Optimus Copy Engine is a new alternative to traditional DMA (Direct Memory Access) transfers between the GPU framebuffer memory and main memory used by the IGP.
Traditionally, mem2mem DMA transfers are performed by the 3D engine. To preserve coherency, the 3D engine is blocked from rendering until the mem2mem transfer completes.
This time-consuming (synchronous) DMA operation can stall the 3D engine and have a negative impact upon performance. The new Optimus Copy Engine relies on the bidirectional bandwidth
of the PCI Express bus to allow simultaneous 3D rendering and copying of display data from the GPU framebuffer to the main memory area used as the IGP framebuffer. (The IGP then reads
the display data out of the framebuffer and sends it through a display interface (DVI, HDMI, etc) to the display). This asynchronous DMA operation provides data coherency and allows for a
dramatic increase in both performance and efficiency."

If they don't fix it in a couple of months (or if it appears beyond a shadow of doubt that it CANNOT be fixed) I'm selling on eBay to some lucky HM/AW owner and upgrading to 680M.

Btw ... where is the poll?

Would definately make the switch to a 680m. Already considering it, though I wouldn't like to spent much more money on this laptop as I mostly use my desktop when I'm at home. The switch would cost 350€.

I'll just wait until the new cards come out (8870/8970 and 960/980). In most games I play, the issue doesn't affect my performance.

    Edit: Meant 760/780. Lol.

have to keep it till next line of high ends come gtx780m/gtx880m. hope my p150em be upgradeable then.

one sure thing is I'll never go AMD even if NVIDIA charges $300+ more on their cards.

This seems to have seriously hurt AMD's rep with the gaming laptop sector - which, all though a small market, is a growing and passionate one.

Personally i love the card (p150hm) but if i had your problems i would be getting majorily fed up by this point :(

Did Caveman jim from Rage ever get back with more info on the enduro issue ?

if you guys search enough , you will find info that was posted here gazillion times about amd 7970m and instead making spamming threads on the forum about amd 7970m issue . short answer amd is working on fix for enuro and its in final stages and btw it takes weeks to fix an issue for example enduro not just days because it goes through multiple stages process outlined by amd testing process guidelines . for ore info and up to date just follow this thread . the caveman guy is in touch with amd because he has friends who work there and he posts up to date issue about amd

Not to sound like a party pooper, but the information caveman brings may be the most reliable we have at the moment, but it isn't official. We still continue to speculate/worry because AMD itself hasn't said much. We need an actual press release that states a fix is in development to calm down. If the issue is hardware related, we would still like an AMD press release stating it. I would understand if they haven't found the root cause of the problem yet, but if they already know what the issue is (as caveman says), don't you think they would speak out to us?

Here's what I'm thinking of doing - swapping the 6970 in my m15x and the 7970 in my 9150 until (when/if) this crap gets resolved..

I understand what you want and I want it to but the scale of amd 7970 issue is not on level of effecting profit drastically or getting serious noticed by media and reported them on-line , tv, magazine that will force amd to issue statement, so they will not release statement . however, they will work to fix and issue if its been reported by users or oem manufacture.

on the other note you say caveman is not enough evidence that amd is investing this issue . is that enough from thuds guy

One tweet, saying "AMD are investigating" and nothing since is definitely not enough. If a company doesnt officially acknowledge that there is a problem with their product, its usually because they cannot easily fix it and they dont want to raise awareness of that problem. Couple that with AMD's support saying that they are aware of an issue, but that the issue can only be resolved by manufacturer and I begin to suspect that both companies will try to pass the buck until we get bored and move on. It will soon be 6 months since the card was released, so we've already been unable to use it properly for half of its cycle as AMD flagship card.

Please note that VMworld and PAX are going on these days, I believe AMD have delayed the report to caveman-jim because of that. Wait a week or 2 and there's a big chance caveman-jim will tell us what's going on.
