My laptop, when plugged in, keeps reverting the screen shut-off time to 5 minutes. I set it to "never" in the advanced power options screen and the next thing I know, I leave the computer idle for a bit, and the screen is off. Never had any windows machine do this. (BTW, the screen saver is inactive--the problem I'm having is the screen is shutting off, through some quirk in the power options). Anyone know why this is happening?

This issue happens in any of the three power profiles.

Sounds like a w7 problem to me, not a sager/clevo one.

not so fast, Mr. M. My Sager has an app that interacts with the power settings. What do you know about the "Power Conservation Modes" settings in the system tray? that is not a windows app.

Lol. Very little, I have to admit. But if its the culprit, then uninstall the app and see if that solves the problem. :)

that's not a viable option for me as when I get a bit annoyed when the cooling fan starts fast-cycling speeds, I set it to Energy Conservation to slow the fan down. I can't quite figure out everything that that app does (or is supposed to do). I tried asking Sager about this but they didn't really know what the app is supposed to do.

How about contacting your reseller? :)

Reboot? I had this issue once when even when plugged in an on high performance, the laptop forgot to switch to "plugged in mode". It kept shutting off the screen and sleeping, thinking that it was on battery.

Even in gaming, it worked on battery mode (25% of GPU power) so I just rebooted.

Hmm? I don't have this at all. Did you guys get this app with your 8130/8150s? I bought mine in June and I have no such applications.

Basically there are 3 profiles in the Embedded Controller (EC) for things like clock speed, fan speed, and voltages. The embedded controller is a piece of hardware that basically takes care of the fans and other stuff in the system.

What that odd little utility does is lets you pick between those 3 profiles, the reason why the fans slow down when you hit energy conservation is because it lowers the clock on the CPU + GPU so they produce less heat and draw less power. The normal mode it is in is usually fine. If you are having fan cycling problems, then you either have a bad thermal compound application or an old EC Firmware. In either case as suggested contact your reseller.

I'm having this issue with all 3 power options. I go into advanced settings for the display and set all of them to hours-long, save everything. Come back in the power options screen a moment later and it's set to 5 minutes. I can't determine what is causing it to switch back. I set both battery and AC display options to long delays before shutting the screen off, but it keeps getting changed back to 5 minutes. this isn't my first rodeo with windows--I've never seen this behavior in the many computers I've used or owned...and I'm getting pissed about it! :)

In the system tray, the app is identified as "3.3029". Right clicking on that brings up "Power Conservation Modes". Click on that and you get a little dialog box with 3 options.
