    Hi,
Has anyone been able to successfully play Quake 3 with the 8150 with 6990m ?

I'm posting this as a last resort after several days of troubleshooting trying to run Quake 3 Arena on my P150HM (specs in sig). I tried all kinds of Windows compatibility options and searching on google for people who had trouble running it with windows 7 + 6990m. As you can imagine, there were not a lot of hits :) Call me nostalgic, but this was one of my favorite shooters growing up and I wanted to play it with my new machine. HOWEVER, I cannot seem to get this game to run.
When i run it, all i see is black screen. There is no intro video and it goes right to the menu screen.. How do I know this if the screen is black? because when I move my mouse around I hear the familiar sounds when mouse moves over each of the menu options. So the game itself is running, but there is no video :(

any ideas ? does 6990m have known issues with OpenGL ? is there anything I can do to get this working ?

AMD drivers have had known issues with the Q3 engine and OpenGL in general. Which driver are you running?

are you serious?? Am i the only one that finds this completely unacceptable from ATI/AMD?

I'm running 8.92-11109a-129968C-ATI with Cataylst version 11.12 and OpenGL version 6.14.10.11318

    any work around??

One thing I did try was installing it on my VMWare windows XP machine hosted on my Sager and it seemed to run fine. How is this possible?

The virtual machine path was going to be first idea. The reason is that virtual machines run on an abstracted hardware layer on top of your physical hardware, with an emulated video card. It means you can avoid a vast majority of issues. I run quite a number of my old school Win XP or older games in virtual machines for the same reason. The combination of mobile hardware and Windows 7 x64 tends to cause problems with a ton of legacy software in general.

And moving to 64bit was just one more nail on the coffin.

My solution was to turn XPS 1330 into an oldie machine with XP 32bit.

QUAKE LIVE is actually a good option too, you can literally run it in your browser for free

thank you for the suggestions. I suppose I am forced to go through VM for this game. Still sucks that I can't play it natively..

and yes I've tried quake live. it just doesn't compare to Q3A with the lack of map variety and mod support and no blood, etc etc.. but for those who dont have Q3 it's a very good FREE alternative :)

hold on and try this solution please. It's actually a fix for Jedi Knight 2 & 3 but both of them are based on the Quake 3 Engine, so give it a try :)

Thanks Scerate! using the customized opengl32.dll in the game folder seem to get me one step closer to running the game. whereas before, i would only see a black screen and ending the process by Task Mgr would completely mess up my color scheme and turn my lcd into a mess, I can now see the Q3 start up console with following error:

GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem and exiting the console returns to my normal desktop with aero/resolution/colors still in tact.

there are lots of reports of this error in various forums and possible fixes, so hopefully one will work for me. I will report back if a fix is found :)

Runs fine on mine. Do you have all the Point releases in the base folder? ALso get the Q3 switcher which also goes in the base folder and allows you to switch between the different Point releases. Its mostly for playing online though. What I did was do an install and do all the updates and then just copy the whole Q3 folder and save it to a USB drive or external backup drive. You never need to install the game again as it runs right from the original folder. Rep always appreciated!!

looks like I got this working natively :) with the GLDirect "hack" it seemed to fix the video/display issues.
The game apparently did not recognized the DX11 that was on my system. I had to go and download the DirectX 9.0c drivers from microsoft in order to run the game.

I'm hoping that I can have BOTH DX9 and DX11 drivers at the same time without any adverse affects???

Yah this shouldn't be a problem. The way I understand directx is that the program you are running only executes the version of directx that it needs to that is installed on your system. If you don't have that version it just won't run, which is why during most of our game installations, even though we already have the most recent version of directx, we still have to install the libraries for the older version that that game supports.
