Hi guys. I am experiencing a weird thing now.
For no apparent reason, my CPU (2630QM) can reach 90-100 'C whether there is little or heavy load.
My tested temperature normally hit around 70-80'C when there is load, while idle/little load is around 40-50'C.
One of the this spike hits me when I was surfing the web. The load was like 0-10%. Suddenly I see my CPU temperature spike to 90'C. The next one is when I am playing a game.
I'm using Windows 7 64-bit and using Balanced power plan.
Can anyone help me figure out what is causing this?

If your temps are spiking that high, it sounds like you may have an issue with your heatsink not being seated or not enough/too much thermal paste. You could try repasting and reseating the CPU and heatsink.
Where did you record the temperatures (or rather, with what program)? Generally speaking, temperature spikes of 95C and up are worrying. -
Dang, I'd worry. Reseating heatsink is the first thing that comes to mind. Worth checking anyway. Make sure you have thermal paste before you take heatsink off.

Is the GPU temp affected in any way?
-
My GPU temps I managed to keep it lower by undervolting.
I am more worried why does my CPU have temperature spike when there is no load. Now I am trying to isolate the cause. -
I am record with CPUID Hardware Monitor.
What other alternatives is there to counter-check the temps? -

Others use speedfan, but CPUID is also pretty popular. It sounds like you may have poorly seated heatsinks on both, because there shouldn't be that much overheating on either the GPU or CPU stock. Especially to that point that you needed to undervolt the GPU to keep the temps down. Are your fans running as they should be? Does hitting FN + 1 take your temps down? (the fans should go to full speed). It's probably either poor heatsink contact/thermal paste issues or fan related, as those are the only two issues that could make that big a difference on heat and overall temperature of the parts. -

Both Cryogenist and I are from Singapore where the heat can kill laptops this time of year; not to mention the sudden rains and high humidity. My CPU cores and GPU level out at 45 to 50 degrees Celsius when idling. My GPU goes to 92 and my CPU cores go to 86 degrees after an hour of gaming (no cooling pads). Temps with Fn+1 go to 86 and 75 for GPU and CPU respectively. Just putting this information out there. I use CPUID HWmonitor too.
@Cryogenist When you say spike, do you mean you get a reading of 90+ for a fraction of a second & then back to normal temps? Or can you observe the temp rising (rapidly) to 90+, then dropping/staying there? The former could just mean that you are seeing spurious sensor readings; (its a possibility) in which case there would be nothing to worry about.
Perhaps there are software that can plot temperature graphs over a short duration; that would let us see the temp. trend. -
Check out ThrottleStop and use the Log File option. You can also check the More Data option if you want to look at lots of numbers.
When lightly loaded, instantaneous spikes might be monitoring error.
You can also try monitoring with,
RealTemp 3.67

Spikes as my definition going out of normal range, entering dangerous numbers and staying there for quite some time.
When i detected it, i have to Fn+1 to force down the temp. -
Argh... My temperatures is spiking to 90+ on all 4 cores AGAIN..
I observed like 5 mins, the temps did not drop and i can feel the heat from the speakers/keyboard area when touching....
I also opened up the task manager, no process seems to be utilized all that processing power..
Is the controlling of fan speed is purely done by the BIOS? The auto-sensing of temps part..
I am suspecting that the CPU fans isn't speeding up according to the temps occasionally.
Any advices? -
