Still debating glossy or matte options; anything look off/missing/extra?

If I have a secondary HD with my SSD I won't have an optical drive? I won't have any place to put a standard CD?

I'm not sure what you're using the notebook for, however, that looks like a great overall configuration. Also, if you put a hard drive in the optical drive bay, then you can't have an internal DVD drive. You'll have to purchase an external one.

I'd save a few bucks by passing on the GTX 485M in favor of the Radeon 6970. The NVIDIA card will only be faster by 8-10%. Also, unless you absolutely must have Microsoft Office, I would skip it and use OpenOffice. Its compatibility is quite good.

If you do the secondary drive you will need to have an external optical drive for cd/dvd/Blu-ray. That is a really solid setup though. I like the NVidia 485 myself and the i7-2720 will complement that nicely. The Intel 510 series drives are awesome as well! I'm looking to get one of those for my machine...

thanks for the input, looks like I'll be spending more $ and getting the 250 gig SSD instead.

You can also always just have the second HDD bay installed with a bracket and install the SSD yourself. It'll probably save you money in the long run.

I have a configuration fairly close to yours. I put a caddy in the Optical drive bay, use an Intel 510 120gb and a Momentus 500gb xt drive. I put my OS and my programs on the ssd, save my pix and music and docs on the hdd, use an external optical drive for those rare moments (after installation) that I actually need the ODD. It is fast, I love it and could not be happier.

get the 2630 instead of the 2720; the 6970 instead of the 485m; get your odd caddy of ebay; get 4gig and order 8 gig off newegg- sell your 4gig or upgrade to 12.
with these saving youll have enough to upgrade to that ssd.

Aside from drives and wireless NIC, I have the same setup (went with the 500GB Momentus XT and Bigfoot NIC) and can honestly tell you I'm loving it. I had a little bit of a rough time with the Bigfoot NIC but I've resolved that (evidently, the network manager did not like my phone's pass-through drivers being installed after it... had to uninstall all my network drivers and install the BigFoot ones last... now i have harmony :)). I'm playing a lot of games in my off time out on the porch (which is beautiful as summer comes creeping in) and when I work I usually have at least one virtual machine running plus whatever else I have on to distract me in the background.

If you're looking for typical price/performance advice for a gaming laptop, good way to save money on that config is downgrade the CPU and go to the 6970 instead of 485. Because the savings are large and the performance diff is small.

    Agreed.

The 6970m bang for buck will outperform the 485m; the processor upgrade might not warrant a the price increase in my opinion.

I have a review on this system as well. Similar configuration on every aspect except your SSD (I have a Crucial C300 instead of the Intel 510). Read it if you have time :). Covers packaging (although different reseller), observations, build, LCD, games and benchmarks. :D
