Hi,
I bought a 860tu about a month ago, and I like it very much. I also don't have real BIG issues with it like HDD heat (the vents on the bottom are sealed btw). My HDD temp always idles between 43-47c and it never went above 50c I use Everest to log the temperatures.
But I do have some small issues which i find very annoying.
The Metal Surface feels like its charged with electricity or something. I can feel it vibrate even the lcd surface on the back vibrates.
My second problem is the high pitched noise, the noise is so irritating that I always wear headphones because I get crazy if I don't. I know it can't be fixed with the P9500 cpu right now. But my question is will it be fixed in the future?
If you guys now the answers to my question please reply.
Thank you in advance.

The vibration is cause your HDD spinning. Or then the transformer for the screen backlight. That could also be the source of the noise.
-
I don't think it's the HDD, because the plastic parts don't vibrate. And the noise comes from near the cpu. I really think it's the cpu whining noise.
-
If it feels like electricity on metal surfaces as Sprint says it could be the inverter for the backlite
It has hundreds of volts coming out to the cold cathode backlites
There might be an insulation problem that is allowing it to discharge into the frame of your laptop

Also, i don't see why or even How your cpu could cause this irritating noice, im almost sure it doesn't come from there. Call with where you bought you laptop for a remplacement or something.
-
Well the noise comes from near where the cpu is not the monitor. I just don't know where the vibrations come from. Well the noise isn't really that loud, it's just annoying.
I forgot to mention this: sometimes the metal surface doesn't have that vibration. This mostly happens when I am playing games for more than 15 minutes. And the first 30seconds when I start up my laptop.
Thanks for the replies btw. -
Sound like it's the fan.
-They near cpu
-They rev fast when you start your computer(if its like me)
-Games make the temps raise and the fans speed up
Faulty fan or ? im not expert at all in fans -
I don't know, the fans are indeed very loud when gaming.
For the record I am not talking about regular vibration, I am talking about electric tension (Dont know if I am using the right word I am Dutch). -
the vents on the bottom are sealed btw). My HDD temp always idles between 43-47c and it never went above 50c I use
Did you seal it yourself or has xxodd or xs2 forgotten to pull out some plastic?
This might cause some vibration because the fan can't pick up enough speed?!
Edit: sorry about this mine is sealed too -
I found that I get this electric vibration feeling (which sometimes gives me shocks) when I am playing on the laptop when my electric blanket is switched on. Are you playing on your laptop on or near anything like that? Other electrical currents and charges will affect your metal surface.

Hey. I recently have started hearing the electric whinning noise also. This has happened since i installed windows vista.
Windows XP never had the whinning noise. However i did some searching and i found that other people have experienced the same problem. I have discovered that if you turn on bluetooth the whinning noise goes away.
This is the only way i know how to fix the whinning noise. Also, if i play games or something CPU intensive the whinning goes away even with bluetooth off.
Hope this helps.
P.S i have the same proc as you. -
I also read somewhere that if you switch the powermizer to High performance it will go away but that didn't help for me.
But sometimes my notebook is really dead silent with no whinning noise at all. -
I believe two separate types of noises are being discussed here.
The first one is more commonly referred to as the "CPU whining noise", which currently can be "patched" by activating the Bluetooth module in the M860TU.
The second noise, which I think is the one wingman4ever is referring to, is an electrical buzzing noise. When it happens, this noise sounds sort of like a high-pitched buzz, and after a little investigation on my own M860TU, I've discovered it is directly related to the cooling fan. Basically, I found out that whenever power is being supplied to the cooling fan, the electrical high-pitched buzz begins at the same time. Then, as soon as power is no longer being supplied to the fan, the noise stops (even while the fan is still coasting down) so it's definitely not a mechanical noise.
I found this out by taking the bottom cover off my M860TU, and turning the computer on while the cover was still off. I saw that as soon as the fan came on, the noise would start. Then, as soon as the fan turned off, the noise would stop.
Also, it seems that the noise comes from where the fan's power cable connects to the motherboard.
wingman4ever, let me know if this is similar to what you are experiencing. -
Raisk, I observed the same things.
The noise begins when the fan turns on and stops when the fan turns off.
I think the noise is related to the global/gpu temperature. -
Morro, glad to hear I'm not the only one. Do you know of anyone else who's been experiencing this as well? I'm trying to figure out whether or not this is an issue common with all M860TUs or just us...
Have you heard or read of any way to make the noise stop? -
Hey Raisk,
You are right the buzzing noise does only exist when the fan is active.
Because when I turn on my Notebook there is no noise at all for about half minute or more. So I went to the bios just see if it is caused by .Vista. But after a minute the Fan kicked on and at the exact same time the Buzzing noise was there.
But this is the buzzing noise issue, I still don't know what's causing the Metal Surface to be electrically charged. And this issue is just like the buzzing noise not present at start. But it's also not always present even when the Fan is on. But what I do know is when this issue is present it will vanish when I do CPU intensive things.
But this is definitly a big step to the source of the buzzing noise. -
Getting an electric shock off of a laptop, even a very minor shock, is not a good sign - it can only mean potential for permanently damaging the notebook, as well as the possibility of a real shock down the road as whatever short-circuit you have that's bleeding ungrounded current into the system gets worse and worse.
-
Hahaha I don't mean shocks. It just vibrates like it's very very lightly charged. A friend of mine can't even feel it so, but I am certain it's there. Because my sister can feel it too.
