I've got an old ASUS ROG 17" laptop that I'm looking to replace. Thing is - when I'm playing games on it the thing sounds like a vacuum cleaner is running. It has always sounded like that. I'd rather not disturb the entire room when I'm using my laptop.
I love the barebones nature and minimalist design of Sagers. I'm looking at an 8657S with the GTX970 (or a 980 model if there's a good sale) but I'm concerned about noise (and heat) coming from these.
How are Sagers/Clevos? I'd prefer the smaller 15" model but are they noisier than the 17s?
Many thanks!

Usually both the noise and heat are pretty good when compared to others. They have good cooling and people are generally happy with these aspects of this PC. You might checkout htwingnuts review of the 8651 which is just the model before the 8657 that had haswell instead of skylake. http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...650se-with-gtx-970m-htwingnuts-review.765376/

The new ASUS ROG, such as the G751, are whisper quiet and cool to the touch, even under load. They are quieter than any Clevo machine I've ever used - in fact cooler and quieter than any other laptop I've used period - and I've used a lot.
That being said, Clevo machines like the P770DM are very quiet and cool compared to most other machines out there. -
I'm not discounting your opinion. It's just that my experience as a past owner was so poor that I will never buy another Asus.Ramzay likes this. -
ASUS has terrible support/warranty, and their two left-side USB ports have had connection issues for years, not to mention some screen bleeding issues, poor wifi reception, speaker issues - these are the reasons I would not recommend the current crop of ASUS G751 ROG machines. Not to mention you cannot re-paste the CPU/GPU without doing a near complete tear-down of the machine, which is just silly.
TL;DR
Stay away from ASUS, but not because of heat/noise issues.
In terms of your original question, Clevo machines use the same motherboard and cooling system on the 17" variants of their machines, so heat and noise on those bigger machines is only marginally better than on the 15", since the slightly larger chassis gives more room to dissipate heat. The fans, heatpipes, heatsinks, all these are the same on both 15" and 17" variants of the same model.
All the Clevo machines I've owned have been silent when idle. Under load, machines like the P650/670 series are noisy and a bit hot, while bigger machines like the P750/770 are only moderately loud under load, and stay quite cool.
To give you an example, the P650SE I had kept its CPU under 80C when under load, and the GPU rarely got into the 70s. My P770DM kept its desktop i7-6700K in the low 70s under load, and the GPU barely crept into the 60s.Last edited: Nov 23, 2015ace_bandage likes this. -

Here are some reviews that will highlight the differences in their cooling systems.
