Hey guys I am in the market for a nice mobile laptop with a kick and Ive narrowed my focus on this model specifically. I know it is impossible to future proof any laptop especially how technology works but I was wanting some advice from the experts who know a little more about time lines and pc components.
The 8662 currently offers a 260m and I am curious how long we should expect to see this combination before the 280m replaces it. Is it safe to say if I buy it now the 260m will suffice? I have read there is only about a 10% difference performance wise between the 260 and 280m.
Thanks!

someone has already successfully put a gtx 280m in their 8662 but you likely wont see it at xotic i can tell you that... you have to order the 280m seperate and install it yourself...

are u asking if it would be a good idea to buy a 8662 with a 260 then later upgrade to a 280?

You'll never see the 280M offered as a factory installation option, ever. Buying it yourself is the only available option. You could try calling RJtech, to see if they sell you a chassis without the 260M.

You pretty much summarized the situation, mfrosty. Unfortunately, we will not see the GTX 280M officially offered in the M860TU. The GTX 260M is plenty of power already. It will serve it's purpose for years to come.
If you buy the GTX 280M and manage to sell the GTX 260M to someone for a reasonable price, say $400, it would be worth it in my book. -
Well thanks for the quick replies everyone its very valuable information.
My question changes a bit then. What will be the next "best" video card offered in the 8662 or 15.4" laptop for that matter? It is safe to say the 260m will sit on the throne for at least through the summer?
I just want my next laptop purchase to not feel like it was outpaced two days later even though this is gaming laptops we are talking about. A very fast market. -

As I see it, the GTX 260M is the end of the line for the M860TU. All future cards will be released for MXM 3.0, which the current M860TU motherboard does not have.

The idea of installing an 280m is pretty intriguing. I know flashing the VGA bios is required (as well as updating bios in general) but which card do you register it as. Could anyone see it possibly done in the 8660 model? I don't see why not.

I would just be happy with the GTX 260M and just over clock it. Aside from potential heat / TDP issues I think there are also marketing issues for Sager to consider. Why buy a 17'' if a 15'' can be just as powerful?

The 4850 is soon going to be available through Dell for just $250, but they are still considering whether or not to release the DDR3 4870, which has no price as of today. This is as a result of the M17 receiving an upgrade path.
Anyone with a 9800M GTS or GT in their M860TU will benefit greatly from these cards. -
