i finally decided(tentativly) to go with the 8662 as my new laptop.

i would prefer a 17" but, i can't seem to find any quite as nice as this for the same price, and its a tiny bit more than i wanted to spend so not going any higher.

so my question is, to you more knowledgeable people here, are these upgrades worth getting? are they pointless overkill ?or is there one i maybe should get that im skimping on?

-CPU and vid card, sticking with base---~Core™2 Duo 2.53GHz /GTX 260M

-RAM, upgrading to 4gb. 50 bucks to go from 2gb to 4gb seems like a no brainer, $400 more to go to 6 is not happening.

-intel robson turbo mode- i honestly don't know exactly what this is so i skipped over it, not that expensive to add if its somethign i would benefit alot from though.

-base optical drive (no blue ray)

    -Hard Drive- went 30$ upgrade from '250GB 5400RPM' to '320GB 7200RPM'

-No operating system..im going to put the windows 7 on it..think this may be more of a headache than its worth being a beta and all?

the price ends up being $1427 (plus shipping w/e that is i didnt proceed to checkout yet)

i guess my main questions are:
would you upgrade the p8700 CPU to the quad Q9000 or is that really something i dont need to do?
would a slightly cheaper computer with a lower vid card/cpu but a SSD be better? i will be playing games alot but not really into huge benchmarks and highest settings, as long as it runs on average settings im cool.
and as a last hail mary attempt does anyone know of a comparable 17" or bigger with a similiar price?

thanks to anyone offering any answers or advice.

Well i think if you get the NP8662 you are future proofing yourself......rather than buying a machine that has a lesser quality GPU etc for alittle less in price.....that in a year is struggling....you will have a machine that is fully upgradable......seems sensible to me.
You will notice going from say the P8700 to say the P9700 or Q9000 as they have a bigger cache memory so you will see a increase an performance.....
I dont think you need bother with the turbo memory you have 4gb ram.....
Basically you could happily keep the notebook at your current specs and then upgrade the CPU in the future, maybe a higher clocked quad than the Q9000 when they are cheaper in price....but for the time being that machine will do all you want it to im sure.
    Good luck in your choice.

Regarding turbo memory: I hear many people who get it have problems with it. The advantage it provides is faster opening of programs, but I feel that the 10-20 seconds it might save you isn't worth the price you pay.

Windows 7: I installed windows 7 beta off a CD. It was a snap (see another user's review of the sager 8662, he also installed windows 7 and had no issues). The only problem is you can't use the auto-run on the drivers CD that comes with the laptop. Instead, you need to go into the CD directly and manually pick the vista drivers to install.

If you're not looking for the most powerful settings on games, I'm not so sure sager 8662 is for you. The price tag is on the high end of gaming laptops of this size (the GTX 260M is quite powerful), probably an Asus G50VT-X5 or MSI-627GT are cheaper, more viable alternatives for a more casual gamer.

Buying Vista is a huge waste of money at this point. Stick with Windows 7 RC Build 7100.

To further expand on this question what about the free upgrade after June 26? Does it make sense to buy the notebook with vista after that then install Windows 7 and wait for the full release to come out and get it free? I mean its only $99 and I'm not sure if the prices for Windows 7 have been released.

while i don't really care about the highest settings, im not really a casual gamer.
i do try alot of new games that come out. alot of mmorpg's, ill be wanting to try aion, star trek, swtor. not to mention whatever else comes out 2-3 years down the road like ffxiv, earthrise and whatever blizzard is working on behind the scenes.
don't want to be in a situation where another 'vanguard' comes out and i won't be able to run it.(forgetting for the sake of argument that vanguard sucked)

i figure if i can get a computer that can smoke most of the games now, it will still run them at ok settings in 2011-12.

as far as windows 7, thanks for the advice. im not all that tech savy but i can follow directions, just have to find them first. ill probably wait til the 26th if thats a sure thing, im kind of in a hurry but 10 more days wont kill me.

Nice i think it sensible getting a machine like this with upgradable components.....and as you said theres a good chance this thing will have a longer life span than a lower spec'ed machine especially if you have left yourself room for decent upgrades etc....
    Goodluck with your choice.
