    Hey guys

I went through the borderlands fps benchmark thread and noticed people with similar videocards (and some with even inferior ones) were able to max out borderlands and go about happily playing at 40-60fps.

However, if i max it out at 1680x1050 with 2x antialiasing, I get 30 fps average and some dips, which make the game not really playable.

I'm using the 187 release drivers from the sager website.

Any ideas? Or am I getting normal fps for my setup?

That's strange then.. The people you were referring to, are they running at 1680x1050? I doubt the P8700 is the bottleneck here, and it's obviously not your ram.

    Fatmanchan uses a gtx260 at 1920x1080 with an oc'ed p9600 getting 40-60's maxxed out.

maybe it is a cpu bottleneck after all...

Yes, I'm reading the thread.. It is looking like it may be CPU related, but there is some conflicting data. Of course it doesn't help when people post "40-60" fps.. there's a rather large difference between 40-60. Does the in-game benchmark give the actual average after being run?

There's actually no in game benchmark, I'm just going by what fraps reports.

I just loaded up the game, started just walking and looking around while my fps's hung around 30, alt tabbed out to task manager and noticed a constant 100% cpu use

    I guess that confirms it?

Seriously though dude how is 30 fps not good?

I'm using a 8800 cpu and I can max borderland and the game runs at 30-34fps that's good enough for me :)

I'm running at 1680x1050, max everything, no AO or AA and I never go below 30fps. In caves, it's pretty much locked at 60 until the shooting starts.

The thing is that it's not a stable 30 fps. Sometimes it goes below 24, sometimes it goes up to 40. If it held a constant 30fps you'd get used to it, but if it goes below or then up, then the stuttering becomes more apparent.

OK, Kevin's response at least gives me peace of mind...my fps are normal for my setup.

Well FRAPS is going to really hurt your fps, and it wouldn't surprise me if some of those people didn't run fraps for an accurate measurement and just said "eh, looks good, probably 40-60fps" and just went with that number.

    Maybe

one thing's for sure though, as soon as i get moneys i'm gonna start looking at a cpu upgrade. This is not the first title i believe my cpu is keeping me from truly exploiting the 260's potential.

Thanks to all for the speedy responses.

Fraps only decreases your frame rate if you are using it to record video. Just running fraps to display your fps does not cause any slow downs at all.

This is interesting. Hardly any games are CPU limited when comparing the vast majority of game titles and my 2.0 Ghz Q9000, in Dual Core optimised titles gets the same frame rates as the 2.8 Ghz Core2Duo does. I will give Borderlands a test run if I can find a Demo or decide to buy.

By the way, is the 2x AA really needed? I bet you will notice a huge increase in your frame rate if you disable it. I very rarely use AA and some argue that you don't really need it when playing at native.

Consider that even 1x AA can place a lot of increased stress on your GPU due to the higher resolutions used in the process of reducing the jaggies and will really slow down your frame rates.

Thanks for clearing that up, I wasn't aware it was only during recording that fps was affected.

I believe my cpu also limits me in nfs shift when there are lots of cars around (like i see my fps hard locked at 30, alt tab out and constant 100% cpu usage, as soon as less cars are in view my fps go up).

Regarding AA on borderlands, i see practically no difference in fps when having 2x aa enabled or not. And trust me man, it's needed (I don't use it on other titles unless I know my gpu can more than handle them). The whole graphic concept they implemented in borderlands involves thick lines in the contour (is this the right word?) of things and jaggyness there is really noticeable with aa off.

Later on I'll use FRAPS to run a 5 minute benchmark. I'm guessing that the average FPS will be around 40.
