Just got my Sager 8690, fan runs a lot louder than I had anticipated even while not gaming. I'm sort of new to this opening up the laptop business. Could anyone tell me in a noob friendly manner how to get to this sticker blocking the cpu vent, with minimal collateral damage? Do I need screwdrivers of any sort? Pics would be good, or just solid instruction. Thanks.

You have to be careful when you unblock vents on an notebook as , they are normally there to channel cool air to all parts of your notebook and if you unblock one, you might cool your cpu, but other parts of your notebook can overheat.

I do not have an Sager, so it might help to unblock the vent, but wait for more informed information from Sager owners.

this is being discussed on the kobalt forum as well.

this was posted by their managing director:
    turn laptop upside down.
    remove battery and mains lead.
remove all the screws around the edge of the base. normaly 6-8 screws.
    lift of base carefully.

not sure how others have removed the black vent cover. scissors or screwdriver.
can anyone else advise on this bit.

Just take of the backpanel by removing those screws (you can check out the manual). Then simply remove the sticker by hand. But it back together and thats it.

if you cant see it on the back plate then you dont have it. like in my post above, some OEM's are now removing them before despatch.

The sticker is attached to the inside of the back panel (the bit you removed)

Alright so I found it. Am hearing conflicting opinions about whether or not to do it though. Donald Stratton from Powernotebooks.com is saying that it interferes with passive cooling on other components of the laptop (while cpu temp may go down, other temps will go up and it may, I guess endanger longevity).

Add to that the void of warranty, which I'm not really that comfortable with.

Despite this however, I record temps of 49 min-mid 50s when not gaming, and a really annoyingly loud fan. This makes me want to go through it...

So need some advice. Have people noticed quieter fan at all after having removed the sticker? Also, how low have temps dropped after removal. Do other component parts heat up? (thus affecting longevity of the laptop in some way).

Last question: Is there any alternative ways to lower temps (other than I guess reapplying thermal paste)..I have seen people with lower temps on my model, and its frustrating that mine reaches high-mid 50s in idle state. Thanks for your help guys.

have you been told that warranty will be affected if you remove the fan cover.
if it does affect it then reaplying thermal paste will defo affect it as its not just a straightforward remove, reaply, stick together kind of job.

maybe worth getting a laptop cooler.
