Hello folks. I have P170sm-a with an 880m. I was backing files up when I got a BSOD, a Video TDR Failure if I'm not mistaken. I was waiting for the log to finish and reboot as per the BSOD said, when I noticed my GPU was insanely hot. I hard reset the machine where it then restarted on its own twice. On the third time I was able to force max fans, machine stayed on and cooled off. My GPU temps idled at 60-62 C. I repasted this morning and the screw head on the #4 screw broke off with nearly no resistence. Now after repasting idle temps are back to 38. GPU temps are still going to spike though.
How do I go about repairing the broken screw? How do I figure out the damage my GPU might have incurred?
I work on the road and am leaving in about 30 mins for 2 week long tripanyhelp is greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately these 1.6mm screws are too puny to use a bolt extractor. For a permanent fix; new X-bracket or (cheaper) drill out old screw+spacer and use new 2mm bolt+nut. Since you may not have the time for this; all that's required is something that'll force the sink to the die ... so use some compressible material (like rubber or cork) cut to size and fix it between the affected corner of the sink and the base of the laptop. The cork would have to have such a size that screwing the base back on would force it against the heatsink.
Wouldn't stress-test it in this condition, but when you have a permanent fix just run a regular benchmark.Last edited: May 23, 2015 -
Very disappointing, it really does seem to be damaged. Now any type of load just makes it hang. The most disappointing part is that I have left it underclocked and undervolted since I got it to manage temps, only to have it poop out because of some other issue. No more top of the line gpu's for me

You can actually probably contact Sager or Mythlogic or Eurocom and ask them to buy some screws. Should not cost a whole lot.

Oddly enough I have an extra set of X bracket screws. The screw broke off flush with the bracket. Before I repasted it seemed much more sensitive to heat. After repasting and putting the sync back on did it break.
Is rjtech the cheapest place to source new Gpu's?Last edited: May 24, 2015 -

OK so my new bracket came in and after heating up the old one was easy enough to swap out. Now the original screws do not fit the new bracket. It seems one step up in size. Any idea where to track down replacements in this new size, not only for the heatsync itself but also shorties for the underside shield? Thank you.

Sorry i have no idea how to figure that out.
So minor update, I am back home and still no closer to getting this repaired then when I left. Is there a recommended way to articulate the specific parts I need? I had a back and forth with Barry at Xotic, he has no idea the parts I need. I never heard anything back after sending a picture of the bracket I need on 6/25. Now I am going to take this machine apart, take pictures, and label everything. Trying to limit the amount of confusion, and hell, maybe get to use this thing soon. -
Bump getting desperate here. I've now had a back and forth with the xotic Rma department only to be offered just the bracket again. It's been 2 months I need a bracket and the mounting hardware. For the heatsync and the gpu shield that is screwed on to the gpu through the x bracket. Any options would help at this point.

Upload those picture somewhere. If it's the caddy you're after; it's fairly redundant.

That's a good way to word it. I need the x bracket, the 4 screws for the heatsync, the 4 screws for the caddy.
