I just have a question regarding cpu temperature. My specs are below.

    sager 9150
    3720QM
    performance mode

When running programs that are extremely cpu intensive, my temps go through the roof. When running programs such as Folding at home, prime95, and intel burn test, I am getting cpu temps around 90-92c. I was expecting to get temps about 15c lower

I have replaced the thermal paste with Shin Etsu, its good stuff, and still get the same temps.

I was hoping to do video encoding, and some folding on this machine, but dont want to fry it.

I was just wondering if this is normal for a 3720QM? Also if it is, what do you guys do to reduce temps so you can run it hard.

You probably already know this, but just in case - make sure you've cleaned the old paste off completely from both cpu and heatsink; then apply a small line (several rice grains long / thick) and screw on the heatsink in the order its numbered in (there are numbers 1-4 next to the screws, this ensures its spread evenly).
If that does not work it may be your fan / heatsink thats faulty (unless Ivy Bridge really is that much hotter than sandy bridge).

Thats what I did. I used coffee filters and 99% rubbing alchohol to clean the old stuff off, and then applied my own. It was a small amount, just a tad bigger than a grain of rice. Ivy bridge is really small.

I was just hoping to see some replies from users with ivy bridge, that way I know its either normal, or I have to send it back asap.

I recall someone PMing me saying he was getting about 79-80 C on Cinebench with a 3720QM.

EDIT: oh wait that was you LOL

My 3720QM has yet to go above 80C under load. Then again, I haven't done any folding. Everyone who tries it on these machines, sandy or not, seems to get high temps.

My 3610QM has been sitting at "higher" temps as well, usually idling around ~47C.

Could there be some variations in temps due to looser binning of the chips?

    Still waiting eagerly for mine.

In addition to room temperature, the laptop wasn't sitting near a window with the sun on it or anything like that?

The room is air conditioned, and its not sitting in the sun.

47C sounds about right, mine is around that too at idle.

That is strange, the cpu gets around 75? Are you using the intergrated gpu?

I ran furmark on my intergrated graphics and it only got to 50c, and lagged like hell, about 5 fps.

Going to have to check my drivers
