I have recently installed XP X64, Vista SP2, and Windows 7 on my sager 9262. I thought I would give a detailed look at the battery life differences between these three os' in order to choose which one I feel is best for on the go usage. I know this computer is not really meant for portability, but sometimes its necessary.

My information is in my signature and everything is up to date driver-wise. Installed every and any update from windows update. All power settings are default. For these tests I will leave it at full brightness unless the computer changes the screen brightness itself (during the last couple of percent it will dim the screen). For vista and 7, aero is turned off and basic is used. I have no gadgets and use both nod32 and spybot search and destroy. Also, I will be testing from boot up to power down instead of disconnecting the power when it is already started up. This will mimick real life usage results.

I plan on doing the following tests on both power saver and minimal power management: Constant web usage, continuous video playback from the hard drive and continuous dvd playback from the dvd drive.

Hard Drive Video Playback: The Office Season 4 Episode 14 avi will be looped until the computer shuts off. I have set the screen to remain on and am using the latest version of VLC video player. The wireless adapter is turned off and the video is on full screen.
    Windows 7
High Performance: 1 hour 6 minutes 44 seconds
Power Saver: 1 hour 11 minutes 31 seconds
    Vista
High Performance: 1 hour 14 minutes 23 seconds
Power Saver: 1 hour 15 minutes 23 seconds
    Xp
High Performance: 1 hour 30 minutes 56 seconds
Power Saver: 1 hour 29 minutes 46 seconds

Dvd Playback: I will play The Bourne Supremacy until the computer's battery runs out. I will use VLC video player again and will have the wireless adapter off.
    Windows 7
High Performance: 1 hour 2 minutes 18 seconds
Power Saver: 1 hour 7 minutes 16 seconds
    Vista
High Performance: 1 hour 10 minutes 20 seconds
    Power Saver:1 hour 11 minutes 1 second
    Xp
High Performance: 1 hour 23 minutes 7 seconds
Power Saver: 1 hour 24 minutes 40 seconds

Continuous Web Surfing: I will do my normal web surfing which includes writing on forums, reading and responding to emails, and just random stuff.
    Windows 7
High Performance: 1 hour 21 minutes 54 seconds
Power Saver: 1 hour 23 minutes 17 seconds
    Vista
High Performance: 1 hour 29 minutes 1 second
Power Saver: 1 hour 24 minutes 22 seconds
    Xp
High Performance: 1 hour 32 minutes 2 seconds
Power Saver: 1 hour 31 minutes 39 seconds

The first set of tests are up. So far battery life goes XP>Vista>7. I found it odd that XP came out with a lower battery life when on max battery than on minimal power management, however it was still higher than the other two os'.

Which ones? If its in regards to XP, I have no idea why they came out that way. All I did was change the profile and made sure the screen stayed on during the show. Other than that, everything was up to the computer. In each I used the same video file and had brightness all the way up. I also had it on full screen. The wireless adapter was also turned off.

Wow. I got so busy doing other things that I forgot that I was working on this project. I am starting it up again tomorrow and will have dvd playback complete and heavy web surfing done on high performance for two os' tomorrow. The last sections should be easier because I can catch up on some of the stuff I missed.
